Before posting a question, please do the following:

(Why? Because in the beginning, we all had the same questions. Many questions have been asked over and over and over. Sometimes the experts on the board suffer “answering fatigue.” If they know you have tried to figure out the answer to your question before posting, you are much more likely to get a more thoughtful and complete answer.)

1. Check out the online Warm Glass Tutorial.  This contains basic information about fusing and slumping glass.  Click here to go to the tutorial.

2. Check the Frequently Asked Glass Questions section of this page to find answers to commonly asked questions.  Click here to go to the FAQ section.

3. If you have a questions about a kiln-forming term, see if it's listed in the Dictionary on this site.  Click here to go to the dictionary.

4. Try searching previous posts on the website, including both recent posts and posts in the Old Archives.  Click here for tips on searching.

5.  See if your topic is covered in the Warm Tips website.  Warm Tips is a selection of common tops taken from the archives of this board.  Click here to go to the Warm Tips site.

Frequently asked glass questions

The following questions have been discussed on the board many times.  You can save yourself a lot of time and board regulars a lot of frustration by checking to see if your question has already been answered before.  Just click on the question to be taken to some suggested answers.

1.  How do I slump bottles?

2.  My piece has a lots of bubbles (or one large bubble).  What caused it and what should I do?

3.  My piece has a crack in it.  What caused it and what should I do?

4.  How do I drill holes in glass?

5.  I have a question about glass enamels.

6.  If your question isn't on this list, or if you want more information about the topic, try searching the Warm Glass board.  If you need help searching, check out the how to search information below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

1.  How do I slump bottles?

Check out this section of the Warm Glass website: http://www.warmglass.com/Bottles.htm

If you can't find your answer there, there's also quite a bit of information in the archives of the board.

2.  My piece has a lots of bubbles (or one large bubble).  What caused it and what should I do?

Check out this section of the Warm Glass website:  http://www.warmglass.com/Troubleshooting.htm#bubbles

Here's a good description of using small beads (pieces of glass) to help prevent small bubbles from forming: http://www.kilnforming.com/cgi-bin/wgarchive.pl?read=12381

And sometimes the kiln shelf itself can cause large bubbles: http://www.kilnforming.com/cgi-bin/wgarchive.pl?read=3608

Finally, the archives also has some good information on trying to salvage a piece with a large bubble: http://www.kilnforming.com/cgi-bin/wgarchive.pl?read=2463

3.  My piece has a crack in it.  What caused it and what should I do?

Check out this section of the Warm Glass website: http://www.warmglass.com/Troubleshooting.htm#cracked

If you can't find your answer there, there's also (surprise!) quite a bit of information in the archives: http://www.warmglass.com/cgi-bin/wgarchive.pl?search

4.  How do I drill holes in glass?

The short answer is carefully and with lots of water.  The slightly longer answer is that you need to get a drill bit that's meant for glass, surround the area you're drilling with water (make a little dam out of clay or something similar), drill slowly and carefully (a drill press is best).  Keep the area wet and keep the water away from electrical motors.

The Warm Tips website has a good series of articles on drilling in glass.  Click here to check them out.

Here's a link to a description on another site (it also has some information about cutting bottles):  http://www.riordanartistry.com/htm/faq/sect14.htm

The Warm Glass archives has a lot of information, too.  Just go to the search page and enter "drilling holes".  You can read for hours (well, at least a lot of minutes).

5.  I have a question about using glass enamels.

Check out Don Burt's overview of glass enamels for the kiln, which includes information about most kinds of enamels. Click here to visit Don's website.

How to search

The Warm Glass bulletin board was started in 2000.  For the first three years (March 2000 to March 2003), posts were archived and kept online in a database that is now known as the "Old Archive."  Since March 2003, posts have been kept online as part of the bulletin board history.  To do a proper search of the Warm Glass bulletin board, you'll need to check out both the old and the new databases.  These are in different formats, but for many topics a search of both databases will be necessary to yield the most information.

To search the current bulletin board database, click on the Search button at the top of any page of the board.  This will bring up a Search page.  You should enter your search term or terms in the box at the top of the search form.  The search is very simple one.  It does not search for phrases, it just searches for any time a particular word is used in a thread on the bulletin board.  For example, , then click on the button that

To search the old bulletin board archive, click on the Old Archive button at the top of any page of the board. This will bring up a Search page.  As with the current bulletin board search page, you should enter you search term or terms in the box at the top of the search form.  The old archive search is similar to the search of the current database.

When searching using the board software, one approach that often helps to narrow the search results is to indicate that you wish to "Search for all terms"  This will only return search results that contain ALL of the search terms entered, rather than results that return ONE or more of the terms entered.  Don't forget to try alternative phrases and spellings of your search terms as well (i.e., "food safe" and "foodsafe").

In addition to the search features offered on the Warm Glass board, you may also search the board using Google or any other search engine.  The Google tool bar (http://toolbar.google.com/index_xp.html) works well.  Just specify that your search must be confined to the Warm Glass website; this is done by adding site:warmglass.com to your search terms.  However, be aware that Google and other search engines have NOT indexed the entire Warm Glass website, so this search may not be as complete as one done via the board software.

How to Post

The Warm Glass Bulletin Board is very active.  It is not uncommon for the Board to receive over 100 posts a day.  If you've never posted on a Bulletin Board, it's a good idea to "lurk" for a while and see what kinds of topics get discussed.  Not only will you learn a lot by doing this, you'll also be able to familiarize yourself with the board software so that when you do post you'll be more likely to get a helpful response.

The following suggestions will help you if you decide to post a new topic on the bulletin board.

1.  Make sure your post is in the appropriate forum.  There are several glass related forums (Kiln-forming, Casting, Jewelry, etc.).  Pick the correct one for your topic.  Commercial topics belong in the Classified forum.  Off-topic items (i.e., those that are not about glass!) belong in Spab's Forum

2.  Once you've selected the appropriate forum, click on the "New Topic" button.  This will bring up a form for posting your specific question.

3.  Select a title for your post that tells others what the post is about.  A title like "Please help me" is not as useful as a title like "Problem with fusing mica".

4.  Enter the text of your question in the appropriate box on the posting form.  Notice that you can "Preview" your post if you wish to view it before it has been posted.  This is a useful way to check for spelling or other errors.  Once you're happy with the post, you can click "Submit" to post it on the board.  The board software will tell you that the post has been accepted and will (in a few seconds) display your post to you.

5.  If your post is on a specific firing issue or kiln-forming problem, remember to include all relevant information, such as type of glass, number of layers, type of kiln and shelf, complete schedule used, number of firings, and a thorough description of the problem experience.  If you only provide partial information, you are more likely to receive a partial or incorrect answer.

6.  Please note that personal messages should be communicated by e-mail or by private message, not in a post.  A message such as "Please send me a picture of your work" or "When will you be teaching classes in my area?" is personal.  Send it to a specific person, not to the board.  You can send someone a private message by clicking on the Private Message button at the top of any page of the board.

7.  Flame wars or personal attacks on other board users are strictly forbidden.  These may be deleted, and can lead cause your posting privileges to be suspended or revoked.

8.  Posts of a commercial nature should only be made in the Classified part of the bulletin board.  Comments or reviews of classes taken are considered commercial posts and belong only in the Classifieds.

Posting photos

In order to post photos along with your post on the board, the images you want to post have to be hosted on the internet somewhere.  This is usually either on your website or ibe one of the online photo sharing services like photobucket, flickr, etc.  If the images are only located on your computer, they cannot be posted on the board.

To post a photo, first click on the Img button, then type in the address of where the images are hosted, then click on the Img button again. It should look something like this (fully dependant on where your photo resides), but without all the spaces:

It's important that the url for the photo end in a picture file format, such as .jpg or .gif.   Using the url of the web page that contains the photo will not work.  If you don't know the file name for your photo, just right click on the photo, select Properties, then highlight and copy the photo url (it will start with http://). The copied information needs to be pasted in your post between the two bracketed img items.  If you are using a photo service you must also set the photo's properties on the service so that it can be shared with others.
