  • Flat casting from the "Terra strada" series by Doug Randall.

  • Flat casting  is a term that Doug coined for the work that he's currently doing. Here's his description of the process:

"Flat casting is much like fusing with the exception that with these pieces I predesign a mold  using mullite dams (kiln shelves cut into 1" strips) and fiber paper to hold the glass in place. On the piece to the left, a 9x18" piece of clear 3mm glass was placed onto the shelf, then dammed with the mullite. On top of the clear, my design was cut for the background and the voids filled in with transparent fine grade frit. This was then fired to about 1530.

"Next the fused piece was taken off the shelf, ground and turned over so the design was on the bottom of the shelf with the clear facing upward. After re-damming the piece, another layer of design glass is cut out and again the voids filled with frit. It is re-fired a little more slowly. This process is repeated sometimes building up 3-6 layers or more."
