Here's Susan's description of her process:

I paint with foam rubber and brushes. Regarding the "Mermaid" I first painted the gold in the tail and waves with a small brush, the colours in the waves with a big brush and then the black lines with foam rubber. This first layer will then (after firing) be covered by 5 additionally paintings, done mostly with foam rubber. The body of the mermaid is also painted with foam rubber. Seen from the front the first layer of painting will appear as the front layer.

The "Feathers" are painted with  a small brush. Then the white and gold squares are applied. – firing - On top of this, I paint 2 coats of black. This process requires 4 times of firing. All the large dishes are painted with these kinds of techniques.

I use colour powder especially made for glass and stir it with an oil developed and made by the Royal Copenhagen China and Glass Factory. Each coat of paint must be applied very accurately. If it gets too thick, it'll peel off once it's fired.

It's a very slow and difficult process and I have developed the techniques into my very own personal style and expression of art.
