Re fusing scraps

Postby murph on Mon Jul 26, 2010 8:50 am

I usually fuse a 4x4 inch sheet and then cut it up into the cabs I want. I would like to re-fuse the scraps and off-cuts left over.

what is the best way to do this? Do I pile everything up in a mound or try stacking them or what?

Also what kind of firing schedule would you recommend?

Thanks,
frank

Pick up the latest issue of Glass Craftsman magazine for Paul Tarlow's great use-of-scrap article.

Hi Valerie

I am in Ireland so don't think I can pick it up too easily - thanks for the tip though.

FRANK,
There are a number of ways to use scraps.
Melt them through a pot - pot melt - or through mesh and use the result on the shelf or container for elements in other fusing.
Arrange/cut the scraps into strips, curves or what ever shapes appeal and over lay them in an "open weave" to form shapes that are not solid.
Crush them into frit of various sizes
Make small pieces into rounds or ovals - shape depending on original shape and size

I am sure there will be lots of other suggestions.

We've been selling a bit of our scrap glass at our local community college. We were taking a class in metal work and surprise, surprise the teacher announced we would be fusing our own cabochons. Anyway, we have tons of scrap glass. We bagged some up and sold it to the other students. It paid for our class and supplies! And now, the teacher wants us to come to her future classes.......
