You can add me to your list Les.

My dad died of brain cancer when he was 47. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and my stepdad just finished chemo for lung cancer... it's hard NOT to have been touched by the pain of cancer.

Count me in Les. I lost my Dad and sister in law to cancer.

My favorite poem From an unknown author:
What Cancer Can't do

Cancer is so limited
It cannot cripple love
It cannot shatter hope
It cannot erode faith
It cannot eat away peace
It cannot destroy confidence
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot shut out memories
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot reduce eternal life
It cannot quench the spirit
It cannot lesson the power of the resurrection

Hello Les,

Please count me in to make a leaf, I'd also be happy to help out with sand blasting names into any of them, helping pack them up or doing anything to help the cause. If I can help in anyway I'd be more than happy to help, being in Calgary it may be easier than in Inveremere.

Take care,

Rick

Oh Stacey, don't remove it. It is the number of the universe!!!!!!! Keep it on for sure. I will add all the other names as well and truly I feel overwhelmed by the response and I feel also confident we will come up with something very special. In a week or so I hope to have the plan laid out and some contacts with responses and then we will see which direction will be the best for Melanie and I to proceed with this meaningful project. Also if each leaf needs a name on it to represent ONE person or if we "LEAF" (could not resist the slight humor as we have to find some humor in this don't we) the names off but say them out loud during the poem reading, softly as the sound of the names will also drift through the crowd. Les: count me in. I lost a sister-in-lw to cancer, and am a 8-year survivor of brain tumor surgery myself. PdV maple leaves with a face in relief were my first maglesses, and I'd love to make more.

Dear Charles, I am going to try to finalize all the ideas I have very soon and then we can all brain storm and see where the best place would be. Since I have to bind them all to the bronze frame of the tree I hope to create somehow, I am thinking it maybe to me. Rick Wilton has SOOOOOO kindly offered to help and he lives 3 hours away from me in Calgary , AB. and perhaps we can send them all here and then maybe the Calgary Glass Guild can all get together and we can have a stringing BEE!!!! Maybe even the Alberta College of Art might want to help create the Tree construction in the metal department. It will have to be created with the ability to come apart so that Mel and I can ship it to Corning. Hmmm!!! lots to think about. Or maybe Melanie and I can go early to Corning and then string all the leaves onto tiny hooks that are welded onto the tree. Many variables to work out, but the leaf part is easier and fun I hope . My Older Sister Megan creates leaves out of her garden and electro-forms them and they are soooo beautiful. Melanie creates silver clay leaves with flameworking and well, I am just so excited about this project. I love the idea of leaving the leaves without names and then we read the names out. Legistically speaking, a thousand leaves would be impossible to sandblast (thankyou soooooooo much for the offer Rick. Very kind of you!!!) maybe if everyone who gets involved to create one leaf (or more if they choose too) can ship them in a lovely little gift box so that after the show people can come and pick one leaf off the tree signifying one person who has beaten all the odds (or maybe who has not, ) until the tree is free of leaves and sleeps for the winter, only to be brought back to life again by growing new leaves. I love this concept. What do others think. Then if everyone likes this idea we will stick to it and just start the creative spirit.
I guess it maybe O.K. to mention I myself am struggling with cancer (hmmm! if you actually say it out load it is easier to fight it!!!) so not to upset anyone, but this project is a wonder diversion from the truth that we sometimes do not want to address. BUT this is NOT about me , I promise, it is about the journey one goes on (drifting from appointment to appointment ) when the truth is on the table. But leaves are sooooooo strong and hang on to the limb even through the worst of storms soooooo !!!!!!! Les

What a really super idea. I have just posted a topic asking for ideas to use up all my scrap art glass - I think I now may have found an answer. I am in the UK so not easy but then shipping is easy nowadays, so I would like to help if I can.

Very best wishes to all of you and here's looking forward to creating for a very worthwhile cause.

Re: "Drifting Leaves" project

Well , this is becoming a very international project with an international feel. All the leaves created could be from that part of the region and this will be the most diverse TREE you have ever seen. My twin and I are going to create 4 large leaves which we will drift around the stage in , fluttering up and down and not touching the ground, (or amybe a few other people might want to carry the 3 foot long leaves as well, ) and we will all be in black so that just the leaves will look as if they are suspended. The tree with the international leaves on it will perhaps become toooo heavy with all the wonderful people getting involved and perhaps will be in the center of this NOW interactive piece. I can hardly waite.
I think the only restrictions will be to create them to fit in a 3"x3" jewellery box so that people can take them home and that they have a hook attached so that they can easily be hung on the tree when we get there. Otherwise, NO restrictions on leaves of anyshape and origin. A WORLD tree so to speak for a cause that has NO boundries. Les

29 leaf making wonderful people creating leaves that are familiar with their part of the world. This is going to be a very international tree. Oh the lucky audience members who get to choose a leaf from around the world. Les

So Les, the audience members who choose a leaf - will they be donating money to a cancer research organization in order to get their leaf of choice?

Re: "Drifting Leaves" project

Hi Toni, Melanie and I are creating 8 LARGE leaves (hopefully) about 3 to 4 feet long and 2 of these will be donated to a Cancer Research Center and maybe G.A.S. would put 3 in the auction (and one leaf will be auctioned off for G.A.S.too). I am not sure if this is even possible and I am waiting to hear from G.A.S. regarding this matter. If it is toooo complicated for G.A.S. then we will just donate the small leaves and maybe One of the large ones could be auctioned off and proceeds go to Cancer Research. If all else fails, then we will cross that bridge when we get some information back from the G.A.S. members. I will try to find out by next week I hope. Hopefully it will be easy. Others have wondered about the small leaves, and if they have a hook already attached and still fit in a 3"x3" jewellery box, then this is very helpful as we will have to attach a thousand leaves when we get to Corning the night of the Glass Fashion Show to the metal tree frame and then MOVE it into position somehow and then the other 8 LARGE Leaves will be floating around the tree and giving the impression of DRIFTING LEAVES!!! Sounds fun but legistically it will have to be well organized with volenteers to cary the other 6 leaves (we will all be in DARK black clothing so that all we only see is the DRIFTING LEAVES and the tree.)
I hope it is not toooooo large a project and well, I better get my energy up to complete this vision, but hey!!! no one ever said I could not tackle a large idea. :-k (this is Melanie wondering what on earth I am getting her into.)
