Re: Need help with Creative Ceramics medium rectangle mold

My slump resulted in a raised hump and am not sure if it is the beginning of large bubble or if the glass just did not slump long enough. I need help understanding how I can best try to fix this piece and also avoid the problem for future projects. Thought I would provide an update to close the loo...

Re: Need help with Creative Ceramics medium rectangle mold

Did you raise the mold slightly off the kiln shelf? Air leaving through the vent holes may have been trapped under the mold. When slumping I remove the shelf which is propped on one inch kiln posts and use those posts to support the mold. This assures adequate air flow under and around the mold plu...

Is there a way to determine that this is a bubble rather than glass that did not slump?

There are 2 unblocked vent holes on the base of the mold in opposite corners. Should I risk drilling a few more holes? I would hate damaging this new mold.

Re: Bottomless Molds - traditional slumping method?

I guess I did not realize these are shallow low profile molds so not having vents makes some sense to me. I just have not had any experience with ventless molds.

Thanks to all for educating the newbie!

Bottomless Molds - traditional slumping method?

Has anyone ever used bottom less slumping molds? I am wondering how heat escapes from these bottomless molds that sit directly on the kiln shelf, and if there are any special firing considerations. I don't see anything on the seller's web site about needing to do anything special with these molds. T...

Re: Help with slumping molds: finished pieces rock

Set a piece of 1/8" fibre half the size of the base on the centre of the mold. Piece will slump over causing slight recess in underside with ring around it . This will stop rock. This is really a neat trick. I was very disappointed with the results I got using an expensive ($50) mold that prod...

Twisted Fiber Rope - Can it be reused?

Hello, I can't find any info on whether or not twisted fiber rope can be used more than once. After one firing, can/should I soak it in kiln wash or primo primer to be sure? In general I am having a difficult time understanding when any release agent should be reapplied to the fiber kiln shelf, to m...

Re: Pocket Vase Disaster Using Stainless Drape Form

Thank you both for the experienced words of wisdom. I never thought of components heating up at different rates, but clearly this is something I need to take into account in future. What I do not realy understand is what increasing the amount of fiber paper release material accomplishes. I understan...

Pocket Vase Disaster Using Stainless Drape Form

image.jpg Well I have an interesting failure that made me laugh, but I am interested in the possible source of the problem to avoid future such disasters. My results are in the picture above. The round amber colored base split then slid and draped over a corner of the kaiser lee board on which I wa...

Re: Kaiser Lee board priming

But anyway, in my little kiln I have a collection of small vermiculite shelves. If you're going to use kiln wash, you'll probably want a number of shelves that you can wash have ready-dried. Vermiculite is cheap as shelving goes. and it's a good substrate for a kiln wash surface. In a small 12"...

ThanQ to all!

I am going to follow Fiona's process and trust it will work for me.

This is a wonderful forum and hope some day to contribute advise instead of just posing questions.

Be well,

Re: Kaiser Lee board priming

Thank you all for your input. A few clarifications. I am using a new top firing fiber kiln. This kiln does not have or need a kiln shelf. Instead of firing on the base of the kiln with release paper or dry wash, I instead invested in 12x12 KL board to avoid dealing with the residue of these release ...

Kaiser Lee board priming

I am using KL board in my fiber kiln instead of shelf paper but am not sure if or how the KL needs to be primed. I can't find any instructions on the KL web site. What I've done so far is: I fused some small pieces directly on the KL board without priming and got good results. However, I did not car...

Re: Molds to large for kiln?
