Glass seperator an Colour DeVerre molds

Hello all, I have some molds that have had way too much kiln wash applied. Can these be washed under a faucet, or is it better to fire and brush the kiln wash off. These are very nice Colour DeVerre molds and I do not want to ruin the detail. Also, I have another Colour DeVerre mold that I've applie...

Re: Practicing with wine bottles - devit problem

Thank you every one for you kind advice. Some followup... I clean these bottles with oxy clean and dawn, followed by goo-be-gone, followed by dawn and a scrubbing pad, dry them then wash and dry with Spartan glass cleaner and a dedicated white cotton towel that have never been washed with fabric sof...

Practicing with wine bottles - devit problem

Hello all, I'm very new to fusing. (Brad's awesome intro class, his book and this great forum are the bulk of my "experience") I've been practicing with my new, first, kiln by melting wine bottles with different schedules, forms, and shelf release (paper, fluid and cloth). I'm starting to ...

I found this useful chart here (go figure! :) ) http://www.warmglass.com/COESummary.htm#metal And another chart here http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thermal-expansion-metals-d_859.html Would I be reasoning correctly if I were to start any experimenta...

When you say reheat... are you referring to kiln temps or a hot sunny window temp?

That is why I held my breath for the entire first cycle the first time I used it!

Thank you for making that important distinction. I used the branded Refrasil.

Glass hanging methods

I would like to fuse a hanging ring between the layers of a glass piece. I've seen this done with a piece of hardware that looks like a D ring washer that is flat and narrow. The curved portion is fused into the glass with the straight portion exposed. I cannot find hardware like this. The washers I...

Re: cloth "molds"

Vonon, A dear friend asked me to flatten a large number of wine bottles for a project. I wanted to do this fast and inexpensive. I'd read that lava cloth would last about 10 firings, maybe more depending on handling and top temperature. If true, that would make lava cloth about as costly as shelf pa...

Re: Shipping Big Internationally

Oh my! That piece is amazing! Absolutely beautiful! If the customer is paying for the shipping, is it an option that THEY choose a packing, crating and shipping carrier? They may be in the best position to select a carrier that has a good reputation in Costa Rica. There may be a customs process as w...

Re: Has anyone perfected opaque frit balls?

Thank you everyone for your responses! I'll fire at a lower temp this weekend and see how it goes. My first batch, which was really bad, soaked in vinegar a few days. That seemed to stain the vanilla frit balls a little bit. The teal didn't stain at all. Maybe it was the separator that soaked up the...

Has anyone perfected opaque frit balls?

I've been trying to make Bullseye opaque grit balls for a week :( I'm following the Bullseye schedule: AFAP > 1500F hold 20 (first attempt) freshly primed shelf (a tip I read here) AFAP > 1500F hold 15 on a tiny shelf primed with mr-97 AFAP > 1500F hold 10 on a tiny shelf primed with mr-97 All cool ...

Re: How do i know if I've applied enough kiln wash?

SeaChange,

Thanks for the tip! I'd thought about putting some sort of dye in the mix, but was afraid of an unexpected reaction that might stain the glass. Using food coloring completely escaped me! :)

I'm going to try this today!

Stephen, Bert,

Thank you for your response and education! I've ordered some Primo and Hotline Hi-temp to try. I believe they are both dyed products. I will practice with both.

Re: Need some kiln recommendations...

Hi, I'm a total beginner. I bought a square Paragon Fusion 16 and LOVE IT! I can use a huge variety of molds, I can melt 2 wine bottles at a time, and make a set of coasters in one firing. It cost about $1 to make a set of full fuse coasters. I looked at the space, shape and wattage of various "...

How do i know if I've applied enough kiln wash?

Hello! I have a bunch of new molds that need to be kiln washed. With the exception of a classroom project and a frit ball project, I've only used MR-97 and thin fire paper so far. I didn't like the brush strokes I got on my classroom project, so I bought a gravity fed spray gun to apply the kiln was...

Hello All, I would like to buy a 10" Wet Tie Saw. I believe I've read every post about saws at least 3 times, and read Cynthia's excellent article about tile saws and blades. I will be following the communities advice in buying a special purpose glass blade based on performance not cost. That b...
