I bought lots of ceramic decals on eBay and made Christmas ornaments by simply fusing them on a single thickness of Spectrum 96 white. I cut out circles and ovals of various sizes (depending on the decal), soaked the decals in the (basement) bathroom sink and slipped them onto the glass. Make sure t...

Kim--

That's very cool! Was it a double thickness fused together first?

Another newbie failure

What might cause pea-sized "pockmarks?" I successfully fused two 10" circles of black Bullseye with 3 dichro butterflies on top. I wanted to slump it into a bowl so thought I should clear cap it to protect the exposed dichro coating. The clear layer was Uroboros (90) and it fused beau...

Many thanks, Cynthia! I've made lots of cabochons with dichro and clear capping (in my Quickfire), but in that case volume control isn't very important. I've only recently gotten a bigger kiln and so far I've fused a lot of Christmas ornaments and two-layer coasters--and done a few single layer slum...

If you are only tack fusing your dichroic elements to a single layer of black...then capping could present some real difficulties." Can you elaborate on this? What difficulties? Could I full-fuse it and then cap? I was planning to use black-backed dichro so thought the coating should be protect...

Clear capping

This relative newbie has done a fair amount of fusing and a little bit of slumping but I'm only now getting ready to try doing both to the same piece. I want to try fusing some dichro designs on black and then slumping into a plate or shallow bowl (maybe 10-12" diameter). I'm assuming I ought t...

Strange! I've made dozens of coasters and lately a bunch of Christmas ornaments (just fusing ceramic decals on a single thickness of 96) and have never gotten anything but snow white--even when using Thinfire. Like you originally said, the color you got is pretty cool, though!

Thanks, Marie. I've wondered about using thinfire over a mold, but haven't been brave enough to try it!

Hmmm...my link didn't work. They carry both Mica and Glastar--just do a search for "jewelry bit."

Thanks, John. When I got the kiln there was no knob, so I just bought a generic one at Radio Shack (so I wouldn't have to use pliers). There are no markings on the kiln, but I noticed that whether I turned the knob right or left the light came on. Thinking maybe I had a "low" and a "h...

Keep us posted on what works and what doesn't--what you really like and what you wish you'd done differently. Some of us have our dream studios on a little longer timeline and could benefit from your experience.

I'd welcome anybody's comments on workshop design/layout.

I'm a Seattle native, currently in exile in Chicago. We are planning to return (early retirement) to the NW in about five years and build a house on some property we own on Camano Island in Puget Sound. I went to college in Bellingham, WA which is roughly halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. ...

Controller question

Me again! I'm the one who was recently given a Paragon X14J china painting kiln. I e-mailed Paragon and asked if I could use the PCB-1 infinite control switch (currently on my Quickfire) on the X14J. They said "no." But on one of the sites selling the PCB-1 it said it could be used with an...

After many months of lurking, I have to speak up because I'm in a similar situation--except that just last week I was *given* a Paragon X14J china painting kiln http://www.paragonweb.com/catalog.cfm?type=kiln_detail&item_id=51 that belonged to the mother of a friend of a friend. My only experien...
