Re: Gasoline-Powereed Sandblasting Compressor Comparisons

For their size, gas powered compressors have way more flow than electric, but because they're portable, they have smaller tanks resulting in less reserve capacity. That said, SCFM at pressure is the indicator that you need to evaluate. Depending on your sandblasting setup, you may see some pressure...

Re: Gasoline-Powereed Sandblasting Compressor Comparisons

Check out the Husky at HD that is also in the $500 range but uses 120vac. I've been using it for a couple years now and find nothing wanting. I picked it over the 240vac version because it is movable and (more importantly) it is quieter, so say the ratings. I only do a moderate amount of sandblasti...

Re: Gasoline-Powereed Sandblasting Compressor Comparisons

I thought that the SCFM rating was all that was needed to operate a sandblaster. If the sandblasting gun requires 10 SCFM and the compressor is putting out 12, shouldn't that be enough? Second, the large capacity air tanks are needed to take the load off the compressor and not affect the volume of a...

Gasoline-Powereed Sandblasting Compressor Comparisons

Home Hobbyist: I'm still refining my sandblaster setup. I'd have the thing by now if Bullseye didn't have their 50% off sale for $1200 purchases (bye bye $800). In my PREVIOUS THREAD the idea was to run an electric generator to power a 220v compressor. The shed is 50' behind my house and running a n...

Bottle Slumping: Labels on gift shop item had hard gloss on top of paper lables?

I was in a gift shop recently and happened upon slumped bottles that had paper labels under a hard gloss coating. What is this coating? The coating felt enough like glass to have me scratching my head. Further, I could not detect an edge seam to the coating. Either it feather's out nicely, or the en...

Re: Ever put foil between two pieces of painted glass? Did you know someone has a patent on that?

NOTICE TO GLASS ARTISTS EVERYWHERE: I posted an earlier thread discussing the ethical implications of deconstructing another artist's secret technique and divulging what I learned without getting any help from the original artist. The patent at the top of this post tells me why this is a VERY BAD ID...

Re: Ever put foil between two pieces of painted glass? Did you know someone has a patent on that?

Well, utility patents are typically granted for 20 years from the date of filing. If so, then that particular patent expired 24 Feb 2017. I'm surprised a patent office would grant a patent that seems so simple to the rest of us, and for a technique that pioneers in the industry were doing well befo...

Re: Ever put foil between two pieces of painted glass? Did you know someone has a patent on that?

I'm pretty sure applying micas to the surface of glass was also patented. Tony If it doesn't burn away or alter the integrity of the finished product, and it's available to the general public, I'm certain someone has stuck it in, under, between, and over glass. It is in the nature of the craft to d...

Ever put foil between two pieces of painted glass? Did you know someone has a patent on that?

I'm not a lawyer, much less a patent lawyer. THIS PATENT (US5820991) appears to encompass all glass types, all metal foils, and all ceramic-based paints. It covers not only the process, but the final product. I'm not going to fault the person who holds the patent. If patent law allows this, then I s...

Re: The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

My ethics on this are firming up. (annealing?) I'm no longer in favor of taking an established technique that is associated with a specific artist and giving it away. Much less, selling it with my name on the project. ... the tinkerers figured out the process and then wrote and SOLD tutorials and/or...

Re: The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

Another bit of curiosity on my part. Not copying someone else's work, but creating a technique all on my own. (Very likely already known by experienced artists) At the bottom of this post is a bowl I created a year ago. I was testing a technique for creating crackled paint. (This is Glassline paint)...

Re: The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

My background is in bonsai. It's a living art where techniques are only effective if you are constantly following up on the design of a tree. We do have A, B, C, D techniques for doing a particular design, but following explicit instructions has mixed results. I could learn a technique in a workshop...

The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

Many artists make a significant portion of their income by teaching techniques to their students. The more interesting the technique and the more unique it is to just one artist, the more the classes can cost. That's simple economics. I appreciate that. What are the ethical implications if I were to...

Help with creating large multi-color swirls

I've seen multi-color swirls and wanted to know if they can be created by the average kiln user. Here is an example of what I want it to look like: DELPHI PRODUCT PAGE I understand how raked glass works and this does not look like it was raked. When I see artists posting their completed works and mu...

Re: Sandblasting Setup Advice Please

The TP Tools unit is a good one. Get the smallest nozzles they sell. What's the amperage of your generator? You can get a decent 240v, 20amp compressor that generates 10 to 12 cfm, which would work fine if your generator works with that. And visit this website also: http://blastedglass.com/ The gen...

Sandblasting Setup Advice Please

I'm looking to set up a sandblasting unit in my workshop. Since this is going to cost over $1000 and I am not a commercial glass artist, I'd like to get this as right as possible in the first attempt. I am a hobbyist making glass projects for gifts and art in the house. My workshop is a 10'x20' powe...

Re: Question on speeding up cooling below 750°F

Thanks for the replies. I'm just going to suck it up and wait for the projects to complete with a closed lid. For now. After the holidays, I'm going to be doing some tests with scrap glass. I'll test on 3-4 layer tack fuses, 2-layer full fuse, 1-layer polishes. How fast can I cool until the glass cr...

Question on speeding up cooling below 750°F

Paragon CS14D clamshell kiln (top or bottom loading lid). Bullseye COE 90 glass. My schedules all use a 400°F/hour rate for the last stage below 750°. At some point below that, the cooling rate is much slower and gets exponentially slower as time passes (6 - 7 hours and longer to get it to room temp...

How fast can you ramp COE 90 fine frit?

Bullseye COE 90 fine frit in a mold. Since the frit is graded fine, do I need to do a soak? Shouldn't I just be able to go 400°F/hour straight to 1150°F? Or is it going to act like the candy, Popping Rocks and send very tiny bits all over my kiln? If it was to simply fracture and make itself smaller...

Where can I get/make glass paints for screen printing?

I want to do liquid screen printing, not the powder kind. Where can I get glass paints in larger quantities than I find with Glassline paints? I want to buy a pint/500ml of glass paint.

I'll even accept a good recipe for glass paint using a liquid media and pigments.
