Thanks for all the advice. After researching a bit, I have decided they are BOTH excellent kilns, but I am getting the AIM. It is EXACTLY what I need, and the price is reasonable. This will be kiln #3!!! I am becoming a "collector". HA! This really does turn into an obsession. My house sho...

OH MY! If I can fuse glass HALF as beautiful as yours, I will be THRILLED! Did you do those pieces in the AIM kiln? I really am not a fan of "set it and forget it" type controllers. I LIKE having to check on the glass, and be careful, memorize firing schedules and temps, etc. To me, it is ...

AIM or JENKEN brands?

I think I have narrowed my kiln search down to two types. I am looking for a small kiln, to fire fast and do jewelry items. I have found the JEN KEN bead annealing kiln to be a good one, and I just found a better price on a PERFECTLY sized AIM brand jeweler's kiln. Does anyone know which brand is be...

Oh, and I forgot to add, we use beach sand from the coast. I did that because it costs nothing, but perhaps it is more effective that the "grits". I really don't know, as beach sand is all I have ever used.

Oh yes! He is wonderful. He helps me with all my art projects, etc. even if he is not particularly interested in what I am doing. BUT the art brings in extra $, so we are both interested in that! LOL! He even BOUGHT me the large tumbler as a surprise....my old one was insufficient and noisy. You can...

Thanks. I will give that a try when time allows. My intention is to melt a pool of silver into a "freeform" shape, just as I do with fused glass, and then incorporate the shape into a piece of jewelry. I have a lot of imagination, and was just wondering if this could work. If not, no big d...

kiln Recommendations

Hi all! I am finally in the market for my very first NEW kiln. Here is what I am after.....since my small tabletop kiln (which I bought VERY used) has a pyrometer that "died" last night (AND The thermocouple just "fell off"!!!!), I feel that the kiln is not going to last too much...

I always have borax on hand, but how much water do I add to make a proper flux? And if I use it straight out of the box, how? Do i just mix some of the powder in with the silver? do you melt the silver with a torch? If so, what do you use for a surface? A soldering block? Mine is dirty, how would I ...

I too bought the $40 EK Miller infinite switch, for an older kiln that is used ALOT! I LOVE IT more than I can say. It is wonderful, and makes an older kiln with no controls quite useful again! I cannot say enough about it. It's great!

I tumble glass all the time, and use a 3 pound tumbler filled about 1/4 or less with real beach sand, then fill it a little less than half way with my glass, and then add just enough water to barely cover the top of the glass. Some glass tumbles for WEEKS before you see a difference. Others, almost ...

I am a big "experimenter". If it were not for experimentation, I would never have mastered my lovely dichroic jewelry! I really just want to experiment with some silver scrap, melt it, and cold work it into some jewelry of some sort. I just see no point in tossing it out, and I am getting ...

I really just want to be able to melt it so that it is "fluid". I do not care if I have to do "freeform" designs with it, but when I "fried" it, it just turned black and kept it's original wire form. (IE, it turned inot charred black wire!) The other time it melted, but...

re: sterling recycling

Hello all. I have tried melting my sterling scrap in the kiln, and all i ended up with was a "ball" of metal, even in the kiln. Tried it with a torch, and it literally FRIED. Any clues as to how to get a nice fluid melt? Should I have added some sort of flux? I need step by step directions...

I use cider vinegar to soak my glass cabs in order to get the backs completely free of kiln wash. It works great! I just let 'em soak for a few hours, and they nearly rinse clean!
