Bert - No, I haven't worked with float yet. There's a 3mm base of 1101 BE with an additional 3mm of several layers of frit and powder. I'm eager to see what I can do with float since I always start with clear -- but I'm also spoiled by the beautiful range of colors available from BE. I was about to ...

Thank you all for your encouragement. I wasn't getting much from friends and family (who all seem to prefer representational work). I was beginning to question my progress. Mira, no real art background prior to this (except as a buyer). I was in the corporate world for about 20 years and then starte...

Kathie and Paul - Thank you. I've been trying to decide if they are "finished" or whether I need to add more tension to the pieces. Kathie - the surfaces are perfectly flat. I'm delighted that you have the perception of texture since that's partially what I'm trying to create. The impressi...

Critique, Please

I've been fusing for about 9 months. I've mostly been spending this time experimenting -- And, of course, the more I learn, the more I relish the journey. I think it's time to gather some candid critique about my journey so far. I've been exploring rhythm and translucency -- using frit and powders. ...

Bert - Duh. I guess I didn't think of a glass cutter since I've not been successful in the past cutting thick fused glass with a cutter. To show my lack of experience -- you tap on the side not scored? When you run the score by tapping will the weight make the rim drop off? When you showed how to cu...

Jackie -

It's supposed to be warm this weekend (into the high 50's) -- I think I'll lug out the tile saw and start experimenting.

You're great inspiration to be resourceful. Thanks!

Jackie,

I'd love to use the Tile saw. How do you position the bowl? Rim down? and then just make lots of straight cuts?

I have the Covington 41" WBS so that's not a problem.

Thanks for the advice and the New Year's greeeting -- I'm looking forward to lots of glasswork in 2004. Yea!

How To? Cut Rims Off Drop-Outs

Several threads talk about cutting rims off drop-outs. What tool/saw do you use? I presume it's a wire or band saw (heavy-duty enough to cut 1/2" or 3/4" glass if you're making a sink). But doesn't it still leave a very slight lip which will need aggressive cold-working? Is it possible to ...

Tony -- sorry I've already flattened the piece (resulted in the score running to the edges) and I'm re-fusing as we speak. After talking with others about the high-temp wire, I decided the culprit was more likely the slump over firebrick/fiberpaper where the center (thickest) part of the glass was b...

Tony, The crack occurred at the thickest part of the piece -- also the approximate center of the piece. At that point, the wire was about 1/4" from the surface (about 3/8" from the bottom). There were several other places where the wire was much closer to or on the surface. Those places we...

Annealing Problem w/ high temp wire

I recently had a crack in a piece about 4 days after slumping. I presume this was an annealing problem. The piece varies in thickness from about 1/4" to 5/8". It's BE glass with high-temp wire through it. The crack is over one of the wires. The wire was included during the 1st firing using...

Brian, This looks like what I'm looking for. Let me make sure I understand you. 1. First I should put rigidizer on the fiberboard and fire it underneath(?) a mullite shelf so it won't warp. 2. Then I should paste up the fiberpaper and use some Bullseye kiln wash. -- looking back through earlier thre...

Again, thanks much. I'll try it this weekend.

BTW, are you anywhere near Charlotte? My brother lives in Charlotte; maybe I can meet you and see your studio next time I visit him.

Rosana -

Thanks so much for the guidance. When I fire the mold, to about what temp am I firing? It doesn't say on the rigidizer I purchased.

[Not sure how I ended up posting to the Business forum -- but I'm glad you found it and answered. - Thanks]

Rigidized FiberPaper Substrate/Molds

Oh Knowledgeable ones ... I've been using fiberpaper to create textured, bas-relief tiles. I've developed some shapes/textures that I want to repeat consistently. Gil Reynolds book #2 talks about using paper with a rigidizer as a more permanent mold substrate. I have a few questions for you guys who...

Rosanna - I was building up to using multiple shelves. When you use multiple shelves, are they all the same size or progressively smaller? I think I read somewhere in the old archives that when you use multiple shelves you should use side elements only. Is this what you do? Do you have an algorithm ...
