Re: Tack fusing holey moley molds: Any reasons not to?

People tack fuse all the time but I will never do it. Glass wants to be whole or in bits but not half whole and half bits. The chance of stresses not being accounted for by a LONG annealing time are too high for me. I don't want a piece to crack months after a firing because the annealing was not su...

Re: Alternative to Thinfire

according to an online source, The mass of Earth’s crust is 59 percent silica, the main constituent of more than 95 percent of the known rocks. Therefore what dust doesn't contain silica? You do realize you can easily make your own shelf paper substitute but it is more work and still more expensive ...

Re: Piece cracked on slump

Less heatwork, slower heating and longer annealing. Bullseye says three firings. Based on my experience with the early formulations of Bullseye where the COE could shift, my policy is to do no more than 2 firings. That requires rethinking what shapes you make, the molds you use and firing schedules....

wear a respirator. You should do going inside any kiln anyway. Do you walk down the street? Do cars stir up dust and you breathe it? No difference.

Re: Alternative to Thinfire

Use a standard pottery studio kiln wash as a base. Add a whole bunch of Alumina hydrate to weaken it. Mix it up and test it. Here's the game. You want the kiln wash to stick to the shelf and the glass if it is an opaline glass and not to cathedrals but in either case, to easily wash off. It can be d...

Re: Casting from container glass

Glass moves with time and temperature so you are going to have to observe what happens in Your kiln. You may be surprised at just how hot you have to take the glass to do what you are proposing to make and have it come out as a disk or puck. You most likely will not get any liquid flow until you are...

Cheat on the study of the book...

Re: Brock Craig has passed on.

Irid on Irid was not difficult to achieve if you had access to a sandblaster to remove the irid so that it could be fused together in places. More of a loss was the way he handled foils and his hand hammered Japanese gold foil. Imagine playing with that material now the price of gold has more than d...

Re: Brock Craig has passed on.

Buttercup as a student of Brock's you will have learned lots. I do hope you did not learn any theories he had about pricing as his too low pricing cost him dearly. Brock's final unsaid and unspoken lesson to us all was, and so far as I know he was unable to pass this along, was to have charged more ...

Re: Brock Craig has passed on.

So Jim what was the class you wanted to take from Brock? Was it one he was prevented from US travel to? You were on the board for a long enough time to 'know everything" weren't you? Perhaps the collective memories of old time board members could help?

Re: Rigidizing fibreboard

I thought you were not to take boards and blankets to too high a temperature in burnout because of the risks of creating crystobalite. That is why the non specific temperature I posted. It depends hugely on the amount of binder used in the particular material. I once used some building a kiln and bu...

wash off the rest of the kiln wash and use a tooth brush.
I'd never use Boron. Then you are stuck using it.
Just use Bullseye kiln wash.

Re: Grinding

depends how much roughness there is or if you have hand polished it to smooth. 220 grit could get you close. Warning the slightest amount of grinding residue will show up. Keep wet and clean well.
