Re: Used Wet Belt Sander Advice

bearings, platens, and other part that wear can be replaced fairly easily and are still availble even for very old ones. check to see that when tension is put on it that it runs fairly true.

Starrett makes some very good nippers with replaceable blades but they are quite expensive. $100+ if I recall, but very good.

Re: nipping thick murrini

get a very thin and small blade for your tile saw. I got mine from www.lopacki.com , 4" dia. and very thin, use lots of water and go slow, even buy several and make a motor with multiple blades and cut several slices with one pass. little wasteage to rod with this setup.

Re: How to figue a price for a significant sculpture

One of the biggest problems I've run into on most public art jobs these days is being able to put together a slick enough presentation. I run into tons of architecture offices that don't have any architecture work so they have gotten into the public art arena. A small group of architects can put tog...

charge for samples and give a credit for the charge on their first order. That's gives them incentive to order or try and move your product.

Re: How to figue a price for a significant sculpture

start at a price you think is a little on the high side of what your ego thinks you shoud get for the project. If it doesn't get the job, start negotiating and adding a few changes that appears you are trying to do everything possible to obtain the job. BTW: as others have said, i now always get som...

Re: Protecting irridized surfaces

you'd be better off putting the pieces in a warm oven and then picking up and use as decoration on other blown or solid pieces comingout of the furnace. holding at fullfuse temps changes the surface on those pieces. BTW: stannous works a lot better on glasses that have bit of metal in them as oppose...

I'm interested since I don't do shows anymore and don't have a smartphone, i.e.old contract that is very cheap so won't switch if I can help it. Has anyone else tried this and if so, ho...

Re: The Studio Glass Movement

Richard Lalonde gave a great presentation at last year's GAS conference on the early days of fusing and decorating with features on The Higgins and others. The Higgins were at some of the earlier GAS conferences as I met them at one. They and I were alum's of the same design school but they were the...

Re: structural ?

I would think that 16 ga. or heavier steel would be sufficient to not torque or bend much in 22" dia. circles. You can always"beef" it up a little with some other supporting structure. Drawing/sketch or something would be helpful as was noted.

Re: Plastic Blowing Art Form , Plastics acting like glass

Dale, from what i was told, bought an existing company that was already developing this techinque and it was established by a chemist that worked to formulate the right plastic that would work. As I recall that was in the early to mid 90's. It may be a little tricky trying to get the actual composit...

definitely a fan of "showing up" and 'being there". if you're not "there" nothing can happen. Inspiration and karma can come when you "extend" yourself.

Re: sudden, mysterious 'film' on glass

I think the proper term for it is bloom. glass formulation had too much alkali in it and eventually it corrodes. I've had several antique pieces that sat in the display case for years and when removed had a film on them like they had sweat on them, when wiped on your hand they smelled like rotten eg...
