Re: Moving a compressor. Disassemble?

Don, can you attach it to a pallet and then move the pallet via a pallet jack or 2 wheel hand cart. That is the way I always moved mine. just be sure and strap everything very snug and get another person to help you.

Re: AIM thermocoupler insulation chipped.

you might also consider buying a new thermocouple that has the insulation on it. I'm pretty sure those are a type K and are not very expensive. I've purchased them from ebay before. It might be good to buy one just to have a spare.

Re: Frit compatibility

I've had pieces the size of a pinhead that when encased caused a piece to crack. There is always a chance of a piece cracking when combining different glasses even though they are theoretically the same COE. Dan, the owner of Bullseye has written some very good pieces on compatibility and I think th...

Re: Tiny Hole Saw Bits for a Dremel?

I think what he is looking for is a core drill with a center drill so he can essentially make small "donuts". I don't know that I have seen anything this small for use with glass that would produce what he is trying to achieve. I would think a good machine shop could weld a center drill to...

Re: Incompatible color?

Compatibility can be a strange thing. There are some glasses that actually change their COE as they are heated and reheated. When I was blowing furnace glass there were some glasses that would shift by as much as 6-8 points the longer you worked them. I also know of many paperweight makers that have...

I ordered and received a hair barrette, I will pursue it further. In the mean time my wife gave me a battery powered potters wheel she had bought years ago and never opened. Bought thru Hobby Lobby and can be run off a 6V transformer . Haven't tried it yet, but that item was $24 when purchased so th...

Re: Flat Lap

Really good double faced tape will hold a steel disc on the aluminum. We used to use the tape to hold things down when we were doing milling on a good sized milling machine and it held. It might be worth a try to use some waterproof Gorilla glue or some good silicone. I'm just hoping that one of the...

Re: Flat Lap

I saw those advertisements as well and thought the same as you. I know of people in the past that have used larger ceramic throwing wheels as lap wheels after converting them. the magnetic diamond discs might be a challenge to use on these as I think the top surface is aluminum so it would require s...

If you were familiar with the production of catspaw and the formulations of it, you would realize why it disappears when it is heated to fusing temps. It never ceases to amaze me the people that haven't taken the time to visit glass companies and get an education on how difficult it is to make and k...

As a furnace worker I used to spray tin chloride quite often as many glassblowers have done. It requires you to create a chamber that is well ventilated/exhausted and if used properly and carefully is not that dangerous. Some people I know even used silver chloride and Fenton even used ferrous chlor...

Re: Effect of Samarium on kiln elements

according to what I have read samarium oxidizes at 150C,. I doubt it would have any effect on your kiln seeing as how it is such a very small amount, 1% of that thin coating on the glass has got to be almost indistinguishable.

Lisa, it depends on where the piece is to be used and what type of joint is involved. For outdoor usage, I preferred Panacol VBB-1. for some interior pieces I used 6108 with good success.

don't dismiss putting a fan on them as well. In my experience, it helped a lot. Those small computer fans are very inexpensive and are well worth the effort to install.

Re: Using Rare Earth Oxides

It depends on what rare earth oxides you are referring to. Cerium is normally used as a polishing agent for glass primarily as a final polish. Other rare earths are used in a few glasses but are normally mixed into the batch before they are ever melted. As far as applications of rare earths to glass...

If your crate is wooden, make sure you have the proper wood as many countries regulate what woods they will allow into their country for fear of the wood containing latent larvae from in sects. If you can get someone with experience making international shipping crates to make the crates for you.
