Re: Concerning firing enamels

My experience is that Colorline hot colors have to be fired separately. Paint the cool colors and fire. Then do the warm colors. Be sure to vent until 1000 degrees.
I hope this helps. If not, get Barry Kaiser’s enamels. They are foolproof!

Re: Controller advice

Yes, we checked the settings and verified that they were for the "s"type controller. Since the s" is so much more costly, I think I'll switch back to the K type. Kind of a bummer that I was told that only an "s" type would work with the mercury relay.

Re: Controller advice

I have an "s" type thermocouple and have had a crack in the probe for a long time. I replaced the sheath in December and have fired almost daily since with no issues. Paragon doesn't think the problem is with the relay. When I got the latest mercury relay years ago I was told I had to purc...

Re: Controller advice

Thanks Valerie and Brad. I will order a replacement relay. The bummer is that it is a mercury relay and I have heard that they can no longer be shipped to California. The funny thing is that the relay is clicking off and on today. I brought the kiln to 500. I seem to recall that there is some kind o...

Controller advice

Last night I set up a fire polish firing, went in the house to make dinner and when I checked after a couple of hours and there was FTL on the controller and I had a meltdown. I turned the controller off and the temperature read over 1800. Of course I was devastated. This morning, after assessing th...

Re: Kickstarter molds

The mold arrived and I cannot wait to use it! I really enjoyed your instructions. They are well thought out and thorough. One question, Brad. If I were to make clay molds of this mold should it be fired first? When will you be ready to make custom molds. I have ideas..

Re: HP Cartridges that work for image transfer

I am confused by all of this. I purchased a HP1212 LaserJet printer and according to MSDS it contains less than 50% Styrene Acrylate Copolymer and less than 45% Ferrite. Will it work or should I return the printer? It appears that the older printers use toner with higher ferrite percentages. What to...

Re: 2013 Magnet Exchange How Tos

I have a question on #26 is all the color in the top layer from the Dense White/ French Vanilla reaction? Is that where the blue in the stenciled pattern is coming from?
It sure is. Only French Vanilla and Dense White were used and it took 2 firings for the reaction to develop.

Re: gold nugget fused in glass

It's really small, about 3 mm. My customer said it was about $25.00 worth of 24K gold but he was willing to take a chance. I've successfully fused gold foil and copper wire and that was why I was willing to give it a go. He seems happy with the results and I hope it will hold up for a while. Thanks ...

gold nugget fused in glass

I've been asked to fuse a special heart shaped gold nugget between 2 pieces of glass to be turned into a pendant. It isn't especially thick but is much thicker than gold foil, which I have successfully fused. For the first attempt, I sandwiched the nugget between 2 pieces of 1/2 inch circles of clea...

Re: Fire pit glass?

The fire pit is propane fired and huge. 2 x 6 feet burner. After it was built my friend calculated how much glass would be needed. He thinks about 250 pounds. I suggested contacting a Shower Door replacement company for tempered glass. Then as we brainstormed, I got the idea of using my scrap glass ...

I've just tried the new Thin Fire and love it! It didn't shrink like the old Thin Fire. The back of my piece was very smooth. What a great improvement!

Dear Tony, It would have been a good idea to sand down the sides before coating with ITC. I didn't think of it. Oh well! The top doesn't seem to be the problem. The coating is hardened and when I brush over it, nothing falls off, that is what made me suspect the sides which are uncoated and crunchy....

little spots of crud on my work

Let me give a bit of background information on my kiln. It is a fiber lined 20" square kiln. About 6 months ago, I had a controller relay fail. When I checked the kiln in the morning (yeah, I know, never go to bed with the kiln firing) it was very hot and the elements had sagged into my work, l...
