Tom Fuhrman

Yes, you're right. I was wanting to drill seashell, but I thought I could simply get a bit that would do both shell and glass.
The problem was that I could find core saws of the right size, but never one with a central drill.

Tiny Hole Saw Bits for a Dremel?

I'm looking for hole saws smaller than 13mm (smaller than 1/2 inch).

I'm in the US. I looked at Rio Grande, but no luck.

Any suggestions?

I'm wanting to make heishe beads out of glass, but also other materials, so I'm wanting diamond bits as well as bits suitable for wood.

Thank you!

Re: Coke & Corona Bottle Slump

The modern Coke and Corona bottles have, what I assume, are organic paints for their reds and other colors. The old Coke bottles, the red remains (I slump around 1325 Fahrenheit).

Pottery Wheel

I hope this isn't an inappropriate message here. I know a lot of you guys were former potters, and there are a lot of crossovers between glass and pottery. Pottery wheel: I want the Shimpo VL-Lite instead of the Whisper because it's half the price. Should I go ahead and get the Whisper instead? Is i...

The pic didn't attach. Sorry.

Nor did it again. Well, the color is easily Google-able. So sorry.

Does this Color Strike?

Those of you in the know, does this System 96 glass color strike? If this is the orange I think it is, it color shifts to orange/ brown at fusing temps.

Mesh Melts

I was doing mesh melts pattern bars, but then I decided to just dump the melt into a saucer like everyone else. It's interesting and fun. I feel like I'm doing an acrylic "Dirty Pour.' One photo is against a white background, and the second is against the window. I'm not sure the order they wil...

Re: New Skutt Kiln

Waiting one day: I guess waiting a day is sufficient, depending on where you live. More humid environments will require more time for stuff to dry. It can't hurt to wait another day. Peephole Plugs: I almost never have anything in my kiln that needs to be vented, so I put the plugs in and simply hit...

Re: mesh melt turn black

I have had the exact same reaction using the exact same colors. I think the culprit is the transparent yellow. Whenever I do strip construction, or mesh melts, the area where the transparent yellow touches the blue will always darken. When you stack the glass, place transparent above and below each ...

Re: Pottery Kiln Wash?

When we made pottery kiln wash in college, it was 50% EPK and 50% Alumna Hydrate. To make it more like glass kiln wash, you would have to add 20% to 30% Alumna Hydrate... right?

Re: Glass/Cash Survey

Glass has always been a hobby for me that happens to make a little money on the side. However, with the exception of very few that describes art in general. Few of us become Dale Chihuly or Damien Hirst (god forbid), but if we can make Cool we can make a little money.

Art degrees aren't necessary for anything unless you plan to do education.

Re: Sharing studio space with friend or significant other? Horror or heaven?

In college, the pottery studio was a collective and I really enjoyed that. We seemed to feed off of each other's creativity. My new boyfriend, god bless his little heart, doesn't have an artistic bone in his body, but he wants to learn. I think I'll enjoy sharing a studio with him.

Re: Drop mold for a spoon rest (open end)

I'm not sure why you're wanting to do a drop mold. That would be a lot of heat, and bottle glass doesn't flow like art glass. Why not just make a plaster mold of the top of the spoon rest, then do a clay slip to create the positive? Or better yet, just let the bottle melt naturally flat on the kiln....
