Re: Beginner questions

hi! what about the project pictured do you want to do? tack fuse it all...full fuse flatness...fuse it just enough for the sharp points to "go away".... or ? 1) if tack fuse, take it to process temp, hold for whatever is tack fusing in your kiln, then anneal, anneal, anneal: 4 layers, stra...

Re: Relief casting mold

barbara cashman is selling Silkemat - a new(?) refractory fiber - on her site that she says doesn't shed, break down like conventional fiber, smooth cuts. cut with non-carcinogenic, don't have to wear mask, etc. looks clean and neat. can be rigidified (she has rigidizer for it, too). she has a coupl...

Re: Reduce/remove micro bubbles in full fused pieces

it sounds like the bubbles you're seeing are in the glass, not coming from fusing the 2 layers together: you're seeing bubbles that were already there, that have moved toward the surface in that layer. bubbles move up (and expand) when the glass is soft and warm enough. if they aren't popping to the...

Re: What Happened, and Can I Fix It?

hi! looking at the top pic you posted, it appears the crack runs along a color line. this often reflects incompatibility. high temps can result in coe changes in some colors, esp. reds, yellows, maybe oranges... your piece may be suffering from areas of incompatability because you subjected the glas...

Re: Stand for Sconce

hi josie, try looking at ikea, especially if there i a store near you. you can check the actual base(s) for some of the table lamps to see size, stability, etc. i suggest them because they had (have?) a wall sconce that actually fits the bullseye sconce mold so you use the base and just substitute y...

Re: Telescope mirrors

casting glass for telescope mirrors have been discussed on this forum several times. don't know if using boro was discussed but suggest you do search (upper right of page) for "telescope". might help save you some time and effort.

Re: I'm looking for info

joe, i've used wd40 to remove labels from lots of things, although not necessarily for fusing bottles. i soak in water first to soften and remove the "easy part" and then squirt the wd40 on the adhesive and whatever doesn't want to come off easily. after a short time the adhesive, etc., ca...

Re: bubbles in 1/8" sheet fusing

jerry, it sounds like you're playing "wack-a-mole" with the bubble(s), not dealing with technique. i think you're dealing with a volume (or lack thereof) issue. i'd suggest reading bullseye glass tech notes #5: volume and bubble control. i know you said you're not using bullseye, but what ...

Re: Spicules and refiring a piece thicker than 6mm

bob, if i understand your question correctly, you're talking about prevention after you've done the cold working....in my experience, fire polish temp won't be high enough or long enough to cause the glass to move. i'm sure there's a kiln somewhere that belies that statement, but if i were worried i...

Re: Using Cricut to cut dicro slide

yes, i have used a silhouette cameo. like anything there's a learning curve but it's easy to pick up. the things that take a little time are the adjustments for the depth of the cut and the speed of the cut. the slide comes out with a nice smooth/crisp edge. i prefer not to use a tremendously sticky...

resource list?

brad,
is there still a resource list somewhere here on warmglass that lists sources for replacement elements, etc? saw a reference to it (from you) is response to older post, but can't find the resource list (or your post). did it go away with the hack? or am i imagining things? thanks,

Re: Delphi Mold Disaster- Suggestions please :)

Hi, Is it possible that you didn't put enough frit in the rim section? It looks like your glass is covering alot ( or all) of the entire rim base and depending on the size of the sheet glass, it could be that it stretched too much down and that made it too thin right by the corners. But that's just ...

Re: bubbles

bullseye glass manufacturing does not automatically = bubbles. so, the question becomes what is... if you post schedule, layup, pics (before and after are good), you'll likely receive answers that will be helpful. without something more than "bubbles" accurate diagnosis is really not feasi...

Re: Need slumping advice

heather, with what you have in hand, you could potentially make a drop out ring of the fiberboard. the finished (nicely smoothed) part would need to be the ring thru which the center of the glass will drop. you could plan, say a 3" rim to the bowl, so you'd need to cut a 12" hole (total di...

Re: Kiln Recommendation

Hi Matt, Read your request and would like to make a few suggestions. Let me emphasize these are only my opinions. First, I don't think of a "big" fusing kiln as a good annealing kiln for lamp working ( bead making), because it would require a tremendous amount of space to be heated for som...

Cheryl,
If I were you I'd call the folks at HIS glassworks. In my experience, they're willing to answer questions and help, and I don't think I've heard a bad word about them. And when one is clueless ( me ), they "brought enlightenment".
