BE ball mold size question
I have a Skutt 1014 (23') octagonal kiln using a 20" shelf. I had a 11 5/8" BE ball surface mold but wanted to make a larger bowl. The next step available where I buy my molds was a 20". It came last night and although it does fit on the shelf (just barely) I am concerned it is just t...

Thank Barabara-It certainly would be simplier to just use the shelf. I use high fire kiln wash but some of the things I read in the archives lead me to believe you need to drop onto something like a saucer or another piece of glass. It would appear I lost a shelf anyway so next one will try to use s...

First pot melt had "issues"
I tried my first pot melt yesterday with mixed results. Here are the details: Using a skutt 1014 kiln, used 4 colors of glass, lime green, black, orange and white. All Coe 90 and all BE. This was a 6" pot with a 7/8" hole dropping 3" into a 14" clay saucer that had been kiln wash...

Wanting high gloss finish top and bottom
I have been reading through the archives about fire polishing and am wanting to clarify steps before I move forward. I have a 12" x 12" fused piece (BE clear base with opal white cap, orange and yellow mardi gra strips and various small strips of multiple colors and stringers throughout. I...

1st Project
I finally completed a bowl that fused and slumped correctly. Certainly not overly complex and to the skill level I someday strive to achieve but I was happy with it. It named it "Family Ties" as it was to symbolize my families connections to each other-some near, some far and yes some not ...

Kiln wash problem
I just recently purchased a BE ceramic ball surface mold. When I tried to apply kiln wash I had spots where the wash would not adhere. I use BE wash applying several thin layers with a sprayer. I have always used this sprayer for my shelf and other molds and it works great. I cleaned the mold and tr...

Using Pattern Bars
I just made my first set of pattern bars 1" x 1" x 5" long. I then cut these length wise on my tile saw to 1/8" thickness. I made a southwest style 10"x10" square panel and added a Navajo design in one corner made from stringers. The piece was 2 layers thick. My issue w...

1st attempt at painting did not go well.
I had never painted on glass before but wanted to paint japanese letters onto a fused piece. I got some FuseMaster Opal paints from a local stained glass store. They said they used vinegar as a medium for the paint. I mixed some canary yellow and painted 1 symbol onto BE adventurine green and a made...

Kiln Location for new fuser
I am just expanding from Stained Glass into fusing. I am looking to purchase my first kiln. After a lot of talking, reading and studying I have decided on a Skutt model 1014. My question is location. The only space I have available is in the attatched garage. This once 2 car garage is also my woodwo...
