Re: Kiln wash floor of glass kiln?

Thanks, Bert.
I have tons of fiber blanket, but I don't know what Alumina Hydrate is, or where to get it. Can I sprinkle glass primer on the fiber instead?

Re: Ceramic kilns for fusing glass in schools

Do the kilns have controllers, or are they cone sitters? I've been fusing and slumping in my ceramic kilns for 12 years.
I use Spectrum's firing programs. You can find them at System96.com. They work for Bullseye, too.

Kiln wash floor of glass kiln?

I've searched for an answer, but can't find it. Sorry if this topic has been raised before. I've been fusing in my ceramic kilns for 12 years. I just bought a Nabertherm Glass kiln. As you may know, it is not a small investment. I've been reading posts in favor of kiln washing the floor of glass kil...

Is dichroic glass food-safe?

I did search, and couldn't find anything. I didn't see anyting on the CBS site either.

I have students making plates with dichroic glass. Is this food-safe, or do they need to use clear on top of the dichroic?

Thanks,

Calculating firing fees

I have had several requests to rent kiln space for firing glass, and am at a loss about how to calculate charges.

Has anyone ever rented kiln space, or sold time on their own kilns?

I saw one post that said she thought someone charged $35/piece. This seems very high to me.

Thanks,

I own one of those pottery shops, and have tried many different pieces as molds. Poured bisque is pretty fragile, as the previous poster suggested. If however, you get "Pressed" bisque, it lasts for many firings, and I fire with a 500 dph ramp with no problem. Much of the dishware I carry ...

Shelf paper on bottom of kiln?

I just got my brand new Cress glass kiln, I've been using my ceramic kiln. Unfortunately, they forgot the shelf for the bottom. Can I lay shelf paper right on the bottom of the kiln to fire a load, or do I have to wait for the shop to open next week to get the shelf? Thanks, not very patient in San ...

If it is a ceramic mold, it is called a Hard Spot. When slip is poured into the mold to make the piece, the spot where it first hits the inside of the mold dries faster than the rest of the piece. It makes the spot more dense and therefore less absorbent. In ceramics, the way we deal with it is to l...

Food Safe?

I have been using my Skutt ceramic kiln to fire my glass. I also fire ceramics in it. I just heard from a ceramic artist who has started fusing that the glass emits gasses that make ceramics fired in the same kiln no longer food safe. Does anyone know if this is true? Is there any documentation abou...

new bubbles?

I've read all of the postings on bubbles, and haven't seen this one. We made coasters. A flat piece of colored cathedral with accent bits and pieces and a clear sheet on top. I fused with a 50dph to squeeze the bubbles. what we got is long narrow bubbles along the inside edges of dichroic glass stri...

Thanks Brock.

Do you have a recommendation for mesh versus resin, or any of the grits that are better for glass? Do they last a long time, or should I be ordering by the dozen?

Thanks for the fast answer. But I am a real newbie at this. Can you be a little more specific for me? Are we talking about a rubber holder that fits a special type of sand paper? Or is this glass-specific. If I go to my Spectrum dealer will he know what it is? Or can I go to Home Depot for it. Thank...

What do you use to polish

I have never tried to polish glass before.

I'm using a dremel with a buffing wheel and polishing compound. Is there a better option?

Thanks.

Fire polish after slump?

I just finished slumping my second bowl and plate. And I really like the way they look. Except, there are still some grinding marks left from cleaning a few spots before firing. Can I fire polish the pieces to remove the marks? Would it be better to hand-polish with dremel? If I do fire-polish, shou...

College of San Mateo

Does anyone know about a glass fusing class at the College of San Mateo? I met someone taking the class, but didn't get enough info, and it is not listed in the class catalog.

How about any classes in the Bay Area?

Thanks.

When all else fails, read the manual

Well, I took my Skutt manual and reread the part about ramp hold programs. And, it states that if you program a rate of temp increase faster than the kiln can manage, it will automatically switch to a High On position and stay there until turned off. So, when following the System96 recommended progr...
