I offer a no questions asked return policy for everything I sell and make it explicity understood that I never want anything of mine to be sold at discount. I'll buy it back if necessary - and have done so when a shop went out of business. Yes, I believe having your work sold at discount devalues it...

The Tacoma museum is interesting but I think a better field trip would be to tour Bullseye and Uroboros in Portland. Then drive up to Woodenville (just 15 min north of Seattle - about 120 miles from Portland) and visit Spectrum. For those many unfortunates that haven't experienced it, from Portland ...

Portland is pretty close to me and I had seriously considered both exhibiting and teaching there - but their last 3 shows were so poor I'm likely to not even visit the show. Many of the large companies that usually exhibit at Vegas and the AGA shows won't be there. I won't be surprised if this is th...

Here's a sample consignment agreement that many use. It's fair to both the artist and the gallery.

Discounting your price is poor business strategy. If you're willing to cut it a little, why not cut it a lot?

It's a slippery slope on which you should never step.

How is a buyer asking one of us for a discount any different than one of us asking our glass supplier for one?

You will always be faced with individuals using any excuse they can to "negotiate" a discount. It's always a difficult decision whether to enter into this negotiation or to refuse outright. I recommend refusal. I believe you will never satisfy those that request a discount by providing one...

I think you've read it perfectly. You may the first to have read what I actually said - without applying a personal slant. There are many that disagree with this approach to business. I argue constantly with the profs teaching Business Administration about the difference between what works in textbo...

I not only believe everything I said, I practice it. It's central to how I created and operate my businesses. It's also central to how I teach Entrepreneurship.

It works.

I've been teaching people how to launch small business for almost 30 years. My approach is unconventional - some claim outrageous. I'll pass on some unconventional suggestions. BUSINESS PLANS are useful only to accountants and bankers. Ignore them. Creating a new business is like exploring a new tra...

You can also adapt a standard wood carpenter's belt sander as a WBS. I did that for almost 10 years before buying a proper WBS. CR Laurence sells glass belts for various size small sanders. Mount the sander under a tap or hose to allow a very small steady drip of water. Enough to wet the belt but no...

We've brought in dozens of kilns and had no problems other than the need for the right paperwork with Canada Customs and paying the GST. The only paperwork you need is the Commercial Invoice and a "NAFTA Certificate of Origin". They can be sent with the shipment, or faxed to you or your cu...

I believe we have a responsibility to do what we can to remove poor teachers. It's a herculean task, but we should try - at least make some effort. It's a fundamental principle of ethics that failing to speak against a bad practice is the same as performing it. NOT speaking out is the same as saying...

Many of the other boards would have degenerated into a lengthy argument as to which particular brand of kerosene was preferrable to any and all other brands - with many insisting that anyone dumb enough to use any brand other then their favourite kind of kerosene had the IQ of a carrot. I gotta admi...

Toyo didn't invent the idea of oiling cutter heads. It's a technique employed by glaziers for at least a century. Not only does it help the cutting wheel run smoother (and thus increase the likelihood of a consistent score) the strip of oil left in the score increases the likelihood of a dependable ...

Haven't tried the Yucky but the Armstrong is terrific. Especially if you want to fire large pieces (like door lites). My ONLY complaint is there's so far a very restricted colour palette but I'm hoping that will soon be expanded. Having glass that can be fused onto large door lites and full size win...

The debate originated about "perceived" values. Perhaps we should consider that just as customers perceive different values when buying, so do producers perceive different values when selling. Some perceive their effort is more valuable if it's offered as art, others don't believe it makes...
