fused glass jewelry questions

I am fairly new here, just a couple of years new, but I started out on the wrong end. I bought a 6 inch kiln, 1990, and used just regular glass. What a mess. Then I bought Wasser (check out the Wasser sponsor link) and just stuck to that. I found someone to sell me BE-thats bullseye thin glass 90 co...

Sierra Kiln

Stuart, Ron and Gale, Yes, it is the Sierra PMC kiln (e-bay at a steal-looks to have never been used). The elements are embedded in the kiln wall-cannnot see them, so thanks for indicating the walls and door do not need kiln wash. I kiln washed the fiber shelf and base of the kiln itself. Programmin...

PMC & Kiln elements concerns

Which leads to these questions: The binders in the silver clay, I assume, are not metal and are said to burn off, right? I would not think they could hurt exposed elements, maybe. If a piece of PMC got angry and flew off and hit/adherred to a kiln element, and the PMC is silver-metal of course, what...

Hi, I guess after some thought, I also have a significant hot spot in my 6 inch kiln where the heating coil ends, but I kinda let it pass. Is it near where the coils end near the top of the firing shelf. Is the hot spot in the corner or the side and where is it in relation as to where the temperatur...

Who's on Maui!

Hi!
Who is on Maui?
I am visiting my daughter February 9th to the 18th on Maui
on Haleakala Highway.
If you don't have time or whatever, that's OK.
Just interested.

pyrometer 6 inch paragon kiln problems

Hi all, Just read the threads. I have never had good luck with my 6 inch pyrometer. My wholesale supplier even sent me a brand new pyrometer after I used my kiln for 10 years - Free of charge. It is always any where from 50 F off to 150 F off always., even the brand new one. Adjusted. I have continu...

Ron-Sierra has AF-3 Orton,one-4 segment program

Thank you, It is Orton, but instead of the fourth program, the programmable one, having 8 segments to use, it only has 4. The new Sierra's have 8 segments in that 4th program. That is fine-I can use that now I see, up or down, but the directions they send are really horrible/ The PMC connection help...

Ron Coleman, Sierra Kiln controller programming

Hi Ron, Thank you for the link. I copied quite a bit of info. down from there. Unfortunately, I cannot find out ramping up/down info involving their controller and cannot even find out who makes the controller for that kiln. Sounds like I am out of luck. Maybe I will look on line and in the archives...

I am not a pro at much of anything in glass, but I have done this both successfully and unsuccessfully. I know a lady who makes her entire living off of slumping/draping with spectrum wispy-s (not tested compatible -same sheet) only over stainless steel molds. Her stuff is nice. She won't give me ti...

Hi Paul again, While sucking on coffee here and trying to talk myself into getting my car washed, I thought of a few more things. We have a wonderful artist here in central Minnesota who has his work in the Smithsonian and all over the place. He makes his raw clay-sand-body-before adding water, from...

HI Paul, I spent the better part of a year trying to make my own molds. What a mess. I used the local high school's equipment which is excellent, but I had to quit trying. Here is why: 1. There are many different types of clay bodies all of which have their own preferred drying and firing schedules,...

Sierra Kiln, 4 steps only

Hi, old Sierra kiln, new to me, excellent shape-1 years old only: Still dazed and confused here, but I have been reading and searching the threads, so, here goes. Ramp rate is set at factory for the first 3 programs and CANNot be changed by me. 1st program: Ramp rate set at (unknown), to 1650 F for ...

Hi again, Thanks for the quick reply. The first 3 programs, the ramp Speed is set and not variable. But, the other two factors, hold temperature and hold time, can be altered. So, the PMC Plus on the first program is altered to 1110 F by myself so I may cross over Dichroic cabs with PMC clay syringe...

Hi Elin, Thank you for your reply. Not sure what mullite is, but I have access to clay and a ceramic kiln and thought of making a few shelves. Possible? I am still learning the Sierra controller. annealing on regular shelf in fiber kiln

Hi all, I just read a 3 p. thread about annealing in a fiber vs. brick kiln fusing pattern bars. Well, I just got a Sierra fiber kiln w/fiber shelf and fiber kiln posts. I had been fusing in a fiber kiln with a standard shelf - don't know what it is made of. The point of the thread seemed to be that...
