dare we ask: what was the cost of this conversion?

plastic isn't organic? it's a hydrocarbon. organic chemistry is most anything containing of carbon.

Re: Mounting glass on metal

glue a wooden french cleat 1/2 to the metal using silicone. if they can use french cleats, you're good. if not, you can get a small metal plate that looks like a sawtooth for hanging pictures. you can attach that to the back of the french cleat with small screws if necessary. look in home depot in t...

Re: Removing old puddy

putty. it's a mixture of linseed oil and whiting (calcium carbonate). the oil polymerizes, and you typically can't get it back to the liquid state without dissolving it with a solvent (more oil won't make it unpolymerize). perhaps lacquer thinner would work. if it's really dried hard, you can typica...

Re: ripple dichro - how to cap without bubbles?

i've just capped it with clear, and fired with a long bubble squeeze. i haven't noticed trapping any bubbles at all, besides the normal champagne sized ones that are present already in the glass. i don't prefire down to flatten it either.

home depot has 4' long tsquares for drywallers cheap. you might get one of those, cut off the top of the T, predrill, and etch the lines you need.

Re: Potter Wheel as Flat Lap

depending upon diameter, you may not want to run a grit lap faster than that anyway. i calculated mine out to around 200 rpm for a 24" disk when i built it.

Re: Loose kiln element

heat it up with a blowtorch to cherry red, then use a snap ring pliers to pry the coil apart to make it longer. it will then go back into the groove, and you can pin it in place.

there's almost no reason to replace elements unless they're broken or very old.

Re: Fusing wire between 2 sheets and then slumping

it will slump but not stretch. if the drop is too much and causes the glass to stretch, then the wires can be pulled to the surface or even out of the glass. the wires will act like a wire melt in that case.

they do countertop edging in the field with diamond pads on grinders without water all the time. they may be bonded differently, or the diamonds are in the hard rubber and aren't dislodged with use.

Re: angle grinder without water supply?

it's not much water. i used to use a 2 gallon jug with a hole and tap in the side up high on a shelf above my wbs for this. most of the stuff you can get at home depot in the garden sprinkler aisle: drip system stuff.
