Re: Mixing it up.

Off topic so maybe I shouldn't reply, but some things can't be left unchallenged. Yes Kevin, Australia has had a lot of top scientists working on it for many years. Their research from tree rings down to a million years of ice core reading in the Antartic show precisely when, at the start of coal bu...

Re: Mixing it up.

The Latrobe Valley coal mines and power stations are 1 hour west up the highway. A very depressing sight and example of greed over sensible science. Last years big bushfire were 1 hour east up the highway and the devastation is more or less permanent. It's heartbreaking to see and to see the ignoran...

Mixing it up.

Always difficult to mount engraved glass, and fused I guess. A special response to the devastating bushfires of last year. I've put progress shots on my blog. https://wordpress.com/post/glasspeter.wordpress.com/773

Re: enamel suggestions

Kevin I use silicon because I do decorative blasting so much, and it is better for that. I've blasted quite a few for a satin finish which worked fine. I think the spectrum I blasted devit off and firepolished is not perfect, so I hope blasting is OK enameled over. My problem is using it as an engra...

Re: enamel suggestions

I blasted the tin off float, then enameled over that, which worked better than airbrushing on smooth glass.(didn't run) Yet to fire Kevin so I hope it's OK since I use SiC for blasting. Airbrushed in small loads, because some, especially browns settled down in the cup quickly and clog it up. At leas...

Re: enamel suggestions

That sounds a good tip I'll try thanks.. I had a full reboot. Dragged out the pyrometer I bought for when I try a small kiln with basic controls. Got a new battery and my good kiln was running 20 degrees C under, so did a reset. Online bought some mouth atomisers potters recommended, but they splatt...

Re: enamel suggestions

You know the expression "win some, lose some"? I get a half win, enough to want me to get it right, but a lot of times it's hell. Too hard I'm going to forget it. So I try at times. Gum arabic gummed everything up, airbrush wouldn't flush but there was a bottle of metho nearby and voila, i...

Re: engraver is still at it

The mere time and effort in engraving means I can't go cheap enough to satisfy the local market, which is more or less non existent. Art glass by the way is very expensive here. Basically I'm doing it for me, although I might edge into the sculpture scene.

engraver is still at it

https://glasspeter.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/dsc_0453.jpg?w=604 I've been looking for a way to have a flashed type of glass. Cheaper, and in my control to slump etc. High Fire enamel onto float, slumped. Engraved. These are going into a sculpture, when I get that done. Soon I hope.small.jpg

Re: enamel suggestions

Airbrush isn't too difficult, gives a much thinner layer. I'm going to try gum arabic as a dilutant, and maybe glycerine which will certainly make it goooey. The plan is working out ok though. I'm going to try a photo in pictures section now. Thanks all. Smokey here but the fires are up in the hills...

Re: enamel suggestions

Well I made a small spray booth, by up ending a 3 ft table and closing most of it in. Arm holes and extractor port as well. If I take glass top off I can just up end again to use as a table. Going to look for gum stuff, food or "clear glide wire pulling lubricant" sounds like a fun thing t...

Re: enamel suggestions

Now I might stick with brushes, it's a bit of a worry. Been using opaques, and just got transparents. Maybe I can fix up a booth, temp. cause I'm running out of room. I've started writing all the steps I've been through so far and will put them on my blog soon. Thanks for advice. I wish I had a glas...

Re: enamel suggestions

Thanks everyone. An update in case you think I gave up. I checked out what's available and researched them. I tried the a very low temp enamel which came lose when I engraved it afterwards. Usual fused glass powders worked out expensive and not the way to go. Having loose release powder under made a...

enamel suggestions

Enamel suggestions please for a thin, watercolour wash look, probably airbrushed on. Float maybe. I'm in Australia which might limit it. I don't think sifted powders will give me a smooth wash look. Oh and can I fire it enamel down for a smooth clear top? Thanks folks.

coloured rolled figure glass

I've had what seems to be called rolled figure glass on a shelf for years. One side smoothish, the other patterned from a roller. Green, yellow and purple pieces. From windows and doors, it's beautiful glass. I'm thinking of slumping, light and easy, but unsure if the colour will hold. Has anyone ex...

Yah Tony. Sculptnouveau have a distributor in Australia, that has opened a new store in Melbourne. My capital. They tell me some of their products will work on glass. A trip to town coming up.
