Thanks, guys.

I neglected to say that I'd planned to have a shelf and a couple of pounds of float in the kiln when I do the heating/cooling rate checks, just to model the actual use as much as possible. Sensible?

Optimum thermocouple location??

Hi All, The new Euclid is installed, the floor (of the kiln!!!) is getting kiln washed, and I'm getting ready to characterise the heating and cooling rates this weekend. So: is there a consensus on the best location for the thermocouple (height, depth of insertion,...). It's a 14" diameter, 9&q...

If you are really concerned about heat, you can put up cement tile board over the walls. Install the board on 1 inch spacers so air can circulate behind the board. Try the kiln before you do anything, check the kiln surface temperature as it fires. My bet is it doesn't get very hot. This is reassur...

Re: Euclid kiln operation feedback pros and cons

Looking at buying a glass kiln within the next month. Studio in BC, Canada and have been looking into the Jen Ken and Skutt kilns, but now have found out about the Euclid kiln existence, but know little about them. Looked into the archives and there is little there to inform me. Anyone have some go...

Metal Supermarket may be able to help you out. They've offered to supply small amounts of SS sheet for me. No idea of price, though.

Re: See-Through Concrete

I saw this link on the CraftWeb board to a new product... a sort of see-through concrete that can be used in buildings. The possibilities are endless. Amazing! http://optics.org/articles/news/10/3/10/1 Geri How 'bout this? Align the glass fibres at a small angle. Invert every second row so the imag...

Lisa-Omega's number is 800-222-2665. I use part no. TJ36-ICSS-14U-12. This is a type J stainless sheathed 1/4" ungrounded. I use the fat ones cuz they can really take some hits and keep working fine. The thinner probes will respond faster, but are too delicate for the ham handed likes of me. T...

(to rdguy) i dont know if high fire is an official term but you are correct in that it is higher than fusing ... i take them up to 1700-1750 df and hold for a while so the molten glass can bubble and swirl around enough to mix up the colors ... i learned about this process on this website and it ha...

OK, maybe this is one for Lauri's dictionary: What's 'high fire'? I'm guessing 'anything hotter than fusing', but I'd like to get the jargon right.

If I understand you correctly you have a angular grinder, I assume like the one in the link below, that has a set of rotating pads that goes to 1800. Where does one get diamond pads to fit those in the US? Anyone knows? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2464724511 We...

Cindy: I have been wanting to try this also - I have one question, okay this might be elementary but here goes - how do you get the sand back out of the kiln??? I just took my kiln shelf out, scooped out most of it, then used a ruler to get the thinner layer and then finally a brush. All with my ma...

One point about powder coating: Since it is essentially a plastic coating, you can't 'touch it up'. This may or may not matter for your application.

See if you can get more power in the one that is going to be built for you and go to 20 amp. This way you can get more power in the top and the remainder in the side. Stuart I'm embarrassed to say that I hadn't thought of that, especially since I'm getting a circuit put in for the kiln anyway... Th...

Is the second kiln square or still octagon? Are they both 15 amp or will the other one be 20 Amp. They are both octagonal and 15 amp. I would recommend getting the controls. You can always just keep them on or off and this point and at a later date then you can use them. OK. Two manual controls or ...

Thanks, Tony. I've made up some patterns to these numbers.

I've gone through the archive and settled on a simple 50/50 hydrocal white/230 flint blend. I'me assuming the water requirement is based on the plaster content and that the flint just goes along for the ride, right?

Kiln height Qs

Hi All, I've got a choice of two kilns, both 120V, ~1500W. One is the Evenheat 14-6 (14" dia, 6" high). The other is from a local kiln builder and is 14" dia and 9" tall. They normally build pottery kilns, but for glass, they add a top element, so it has both top and side element...
