Re: "Collectors' Discount"

I just started coming up against this recently: at retail shows buyers are asking for The Discount, not just "can you do any better?" but "can I have a collectors' discount ? First they tell me about their Chihuly, their Moje, their John Kuhn, and then we discuss the work in front of...

Re: any experienced deviter lobbying with a spare minut read

I've been asked to make some 4' and 2 inch square tiles for a washroom from tempered chunks devitrified. I have come to the conclusion that the amount of devit I get may depend where the float came from. -Does a "cloudier" tinside mean your going to have more/less devit ? -Can anyone tell...

Interesting that this rigidizer comes in powdered form. Most solutions with particles that are small use a polymer mycel (sp?) to help keep those little bits in solution and "unclumped". Maybe not a big deal for rigidizing shelves and fiber board...after all, we're all used to constantly ...

the hard way! Lesson #1: When two of the relays in your kiln fail, replace them all. Why: I recently replaced two of the four relays in my Paragon GL24AD kiln. A couple of firings later, yup, another one failed. Two more are now on order. Lesson #2: When you're having relay problems, DON'T USE THE ...

Re: How do you see new work

Ok, I've been hanging out here this afternoon. I was reading the thread that Jackie started and then took a long look at the photographer's web site that Lani posted. The images on the photographer's site got me thinking, how did they envision these images. Then I thought about how I envision my wo...

Thanks to Lauri Levanto, we have a preliminary draft of an online dictionary of kiln-forming terms. Please check it out and let us know what you think. This is a draft, not a final version, so comments are encouraged. If you have suggestions for improvement, terms to add, or corrections, please not...

Re: Reconciling Temp Differences Between Kilns

Hi. After 9 years with a Paragon GL22AD, I just added a Skutt Clamshell to my armamentarium. Both great kilns, but I'm finding that the Skutt fires at different temps than my Paragon. It seems that I achieve the same effects in the Skutt at temps about 40 degrees lower than the Paragon. eg an "...

that's what he implied, but didn't state. i would suppose that the chemicals used would migrate or otherwise change in some manner at fusing temps though, so they still might go away. i suspect a very low slump temp of uro in a single layer might work. you might still get devit though, and low temp...

Re: breakthrough rigidizer news

I just spoke to Wes Jones at Wesbond corp. They are a maker of rigidizers that major companies buy from. They make both colloidal silica and alumina. He told me that colloidal alumina seems like a much better material to be rigidizing boards with, for several reasons. The silica turns to crystaboli...

Re: Pigment of my imagination?

i'm always curious why there isn't a good magenta or fuschia in the color lines of any of the fusible, and why the most intriguing ring mottles don't handle fusing well - no i've not tried them but i've been told they don't like going to full fuse but i would love to fuse a layer of ring mottles to...

Re: Pigment of my imagination?

I've been watching colors develop in Bullseye glass and I'm trying to understand the reason. I'm familiar with the process of "striking" for red and orange opal glass and see the results often. Is it the same process when other colors seem to develop after firing a time or two? Example, s...
