Thank you both of you for replying! I must admit that I've been holding my breath... Lynn- Trust me, I would LOVE to go bigger, but about as large as I can safely go in my kiln is 4" by 4", as it's just a little bead annealer. No chance of getting a bigger kiln at the moment, either. I hav...

Sterling Silver is .925 silver and .075 other metal. The other metal is not standardized, but it usually is copper. Copper oxidizes, so when the sterling turns black, it's because of the copper in it. Therefore, in order to have sterling that doesn't oxidize, you would need the other metal to be som...

My first pictures of glass on Warm Glass... eek!

I almost feel embarressed to post this piece up, having seen complex and multi-faceted work coming from everyone on here, but hey, I've just started... I have quilting in my background... when we lived in the U.P., my mom would constantly enter quilt shows and win first place, and we used to have a ...

I really like the sqares... they contrast nicely with the flowing lines, and I also like having the touch of green in there... makes it look a lot better, IMHO.

I am planning to use the fiberboard flat on my kilnshelf, not raised, to slump my glass on. Just cutting out a hole in the middle & slumping it the depth of the board, maybe the depth of two bards if I stacked it. Will this be any problem strengthwise doing this? Got it! No, you shouldn't have ...

I'm going to try to do this if I can... I haven't made that much stuff, but I know where my thought processes have been leading me... my "usual" style: small, geometric, cool colors, flat, jewelry, transparents opposite: small (kiln restrictions), "flow-y", warm or grayscale colo...

If I'm correct, it's to make a reusable mold that you can then use to make many plaster molds. It's not something that you'd want to use in the kiln! :) Page 3 of the following link from bullseye's "Get Smart" series talks about hydrogel, which I'm guessing to be similar to your hydracast....

by any chance, any quilting in your history? :)

I think it's awesome... That's something I want to do, to create glass quilt pieces... I love the perfection and caution needed for them. :) Of course, I need a bigger kiln than my 4 by 4...

someday...

I know, I know, it's a little old.... but it's almost done! So, I decided to take the all metals route, simply because it would be something I know how to do! It's almost done, because I may still put in a half drilled ball or set a stone or something, I'm not sure.... and it's now spring break, so ...

while I've never potmelted before, the impression I get is that no, you don't need to kiln wash the pot interior... after all, you are melting out of it, and what little is left behind isn't worth saving, and using kiln wash inside the pot may even contaminate your potmelt.

For the lampworker situation, I would have approached the lampworker and politely tried to explain. I'm a lampworker, and have been for three years. At first, fusing really confused me... I saw no artistic skill involved, no difficultly, etc. However, rather than be disdainful, I set it in the back ...

In lampworking, at least, you want to take the glass up to a fully molten state to get rid of a crack... I suspect that it's the same thing, that those cracks will always exist unless you melt it down completely...

I'm assuming though that not all plaster is created equal... what sort of plaster? and where would I get silica?

And for my personal use, right now, I'd prefer something that's already mixed, where all I have to do is mix it with water... Something I can buy ready like that.
