Re: Light bulbs for photo shoot

I've decided to buy incandescent photoflood lightbulbs, probably 500 watts, plus I just ordered the Idiots' Guide to D5000 Nikkon cameras. It'll get me to really fool around with all my camera's little buttons and start understanding how to control how I take a photo. I'm taping up black plastic ove...

Light bulbs for photo shoot

I'm going to be taking photos of quite a few pieces of glass sculpture. I have access to just about everything I need from stands, roll of paper for background drape, decent camera, etc. All I need are the light bulbs, which I googled information about and was overwhelmed by the amount of informatio...

Re: Ode to kiln controllers...

Ha ha, I'm about to dig out of storage and hook up my ancient first kiln, sans kiln controller, to anneal glass beads in. I'm already dreading it and eyeballing those really nice little annealing kilns....

Re: not quite a fused glass question, ? about beadmaking eye protection

Thanks! I am using soft glass, making relatively small objects.

not quite a fused glass question, ? about beadmaking eye protection

I'm hooking up my oxygen propane torch again after a ten year break and need to replace my old didymium glasses. I have no idea which number I need to get, I believe they come in 1, 2, 3 strengths. All my books on the subject are ancient, I'd like more up to date information. Googling for the answer...

update on balloon and condom freeze and fuse

Yesterday I tried 3 freeze and fuse molds, like I mentioned I might try a couple of weeks ago. I used a small, round balloon, a condom, and an ice cube tray that made round ice cubes. By far the most successful was the balloon, which turned out with enough little folds up near where I tied it off to...

Re: freeze and fuse in a condom

So the round ice cube mold has been ordered, but I may still try fuse and freeze with balloons too. I'd prefer to have a slightly imperfect, more organic, shape to my form. But I'll give it a try! If nothing else I'll have cool ice cubes.

Re: freeze and fuse in a condom

Cynthia, Many thanks for your response! I am a mere babe to casting, so your advice will go a long way. I've used condoms in the past with plaster, so I can pour a lot of plaster into them and get the condom to stretch out a bit, which balloons won't do. But with this freeze and fuse, I really only ...

freeze and fuse in a condom

I've only done the traditional method of freeze and fuse once, in an eye cube tray, but now I'm wondering if it would work with a condom filled with the glass powder slurry? Believe it or not, I've used condoms filled with plaster as a mold quite a bit. The condom's original shape gets lost and I ge...

new BE cutting system

Has anyone used the new Bullseye G-Manu Cut1, Cutting System? Looks simple yet functional, although I'm a little suspicious about how long the plastic cutting edge will hold up.

Just remembered, I used the stencil to make a wafer. It worked just fine, and I imagine I could have used it in the classic stencil technique also.

I used one of Martha's stencils with powdered glass and it worked, and there was a lot of detail in it.

casting fishhooks

I might try casting a small slab of glass with stainless steel fishhooks in it, to use as a piece for a piece of sculpture. Might by 6" x 6" x 2"or 3" thick. I did a quick run with a fishhook between a couple of layers of glass at a pretty high rate of speed, maybe 300 degrees to...

If I get the glass to do what I want it to, I'll be using the woven glass in part of a sculpture.
