To make putty. Whiting, 50% raw linseed oil, 50% boiled linseed oil, cement color pigment (black). Boiled oil dries faster then raw. If you add more boiled oil the putty will set up faster, and dry out in the can faster. Add oil to the whiting till the putty is like taffy and thumb it under the lead...

Glossy or flat surface depends on the paint used. Some full fire with a gloss, others flat. You can add zinc (Reusche) to the paint mix to get a gloss paint to fire flat at full temperature. Neither oil or water effect firing temps. It burns off. The temp depends on the manufacturers recommendation ...

I hate to differ, but. It is not the hard to get a graded look with acid etching. It was done in nearly all the Tiffany window sunsets. We did a screen job where we pulled about 150 pieces of glass. We used #175 oil and cleaned the screen with mineral spirits. The screen stayed sharp with no sign of deteriorating.
