It seems to me that a collector is well justified in buying a piece of the artist along with the object. Objects have a history associated with them. Nikki Nikki's posting beautifully captured the concept that art is not created, and does not exist in a vacuum. An understanding of the contextual en...

You could write about what inspires you, what parts of your life led you to this path, find the work around art in your past that led to this. While some customers are interested in your pedigree, others just want to know what it is about you that drives you to make what you make. If you can't writ...

OT/tangential to initial thread topic-- state-wide exclusivity Hi Sara, Good point on state-wide exclusivity, but please consider one size may not fit all. Your points on the exclusivity, quantity, and commission are very, very valid and should be seriously considered by anyone entering into a busin...

Has anyone been asked/told by the galleries to please not sell on the 'net? Yes. The gallery which shows my work in AZ specifies this in their contract as well as state-wide exclusivity. After discussing the website issue with the gallery manager, it was agreed that referring interested parties to ...

Here is the update as promised: I ended up using method A (loose frit with wafer face up, taken to tack fuse). Then slumping resulting wafer into ceramic molds (first a very shallow mold, then one with slightly steeper sides). After combing through the old archives again, the process if very much li...

Barbara, you are right; it is a bit of a different animal. I was mulling over grinding the edges last night. I grind the edges of the wafers now if I want to change the shape in any way. My husband and I were discussing how far I should push things given that packing and shipping might be problemati...

Know what you mean about the edges dimming out and disappearing; it is very appealing. Good food for thought. The little brain gears are turning away and I suspect that I'll be chewing on this all night (happily so).

Thank you!!

It's warranted. It'll be delicate. The edges will crumble with any handling. Silly me. Makes sense. It would be just like the present frit wafers; look at the edges cross-eyed and they crumble. If I am understanding your reply correctly, I could work at less than a 1/4" total pre-fire depth, b...

Thank you, Brock. Your timely response just might get me back into the studio tonight! I realize I do have additional questions: My current thinking is that the base wafer should be reasonably thick, mmmm say a 1/4" or so, so it will hold up during the entire fuse/slump process. Is it feasible ...

Slump de frit??

I'm not sure if this belongs in the kiln-forming or the kiln-casting forum, but advice would be greatly appreciated. What I would like to do is take frit wafers I have made, add them to additional layers of frit, take the composite piece to a tack fuse, then form the piece using a mold. A final suga...

I am not aware of a local (Mpls/St P) shop or studio that rents kiln time for glass, but someone from the following list might be able to help you out. J.Ring Glass Studio 651.644.8193 Joe Ring & Susan Thrash I know that Joe and Susan do not rent out their kilns. They do offer basic classes and ...

Neither glassblowing or warmglass craft require much skill. Neither require anything more than equipment, rudimentary demonstration, and a bit of safety instruction, to execute the craft successfully.
Yes, with a heavy emphasis on the "execute."

The solicitation sure does not sound like it's on the up and up. I'm curious, what do people think the likelihood is that someone would actually think this is legitimate and send their money and work to the Art Glass Contest 2004? This worries me more than a little bit. Kris (working on that "n...

Mark Stay also works well. It is a waxy mixture that looks and smells like beeswax mixed with solvent. It retails for roughly $4 for a 1oz jar. Operates on same principle as the Chapstick ---- which I will have to try once I run out of Mark Stay. Mark Stay 84 Hillbilly Dr. Galena, MO 65656 417-272-5...

>>This morn when I opened the kiln, every piece had cute (sarcasm) little upturned corners. We will re-fuse, but what! causes this? Carla, I use BE ThinFire under fritwafers, some small, some quite large (11" x 11" largest so far). These are fired to 1285*F. Unless I weight the edges of th...
