Re: Large Kiln Shelves, redux

Hi Brad, Thanks for the tips and info; I really appreciate it! And thanks, Buttercup--I never thought of using our three cats b-day's as lottery numbers. #-o I'll either be filthy rich, and send you a retainer fee--or I'll be in the doghouse when my wife finds out I spent my retirement on gla...

Re: Large Kiln Shelves, redux

Oh, that's good info, Brad. Do you have a recommendation for adjustments to firing schedules? I guess particularly on the ramp up to working temps? I currently fire on Unifrax HD boards, but they're not big enough for this project. I typically fire up to process temps at around 275 deg. F to 300 deg...

Re: Large Kiln Shelves, redux

Thanks, Brad--for crushing my hopes and my dreams! :D You didn't even give me the winning lottery numbers! I'm going to shoot for a Euclid shelf and just leave the big, not-nearly-light-as-a-feather shelf in the kiln for perpetuity. I hadn't thought about the sand-based idea, though--that's a good t...

Re: Large Kiln Shelves, redux

Hi Buttercup! Unfortunately, my local supplier only stocks the Unifrax HD boards in 24" x 36". To special order a larger board was ridiculously expensive and I'd be stuck with massive quantities of HD board! #-o P.S. You didn't mention your winning lottery ticket numbers! I'm all ears!

Large Kiln Shelves, redux

Hey fellow glass clan members, I know this question has been visited in the past, but some of the responses are dated, and some suppliers mentioned have gone out of business, and/or I'd hoped for more current perspectives on options available. Essentially, I need a 20 inch x 60 inch kiln shelf that ...

glass and the recycle center

Hi fellow artists, I'm trying to do a late spring clean, and I've got many pounds of scrap glass left over from experimentation that aren't really re-usable, and I need them out of the way. My local recycle center accepts 'clear' glass (usually clear bottles, etc.) and 'colored' glass (i.e. brown an...

Re: Physical art objects or digital art? Their impact on us

I read some, and skimmed some-- not too much, really-- of Don's link. Something must be wrong with my brain. I understood some parts of it, and that was troubling, but other parts hurt to read, which was somewhat comforting. Is there a doctorate degree somewhere where a person can actually learn to ...

Re: s/steels rings

Hi Paul, cutting the ring can be made to work. It's just that the fiber paper is much easier, and much less destructive. You could probably cut the ring and place kiln bricks, or some other weights, around the edge of the ring to hold it together during firing. Or you could weld on a nut and screw f...

Re: Silver leaf/foil

@ Kevin I'd heard of yellow staining when silver corrupts kiln shelves. Are there other concerns when in the studio environment also, other than just being messy to work with? (Full disclosure, I've not worked with either leaf or foil as an inclusion, so the question may seem silly and the answer is...

Re: New tutorial

Those are fun, and a lot of possibilities exist. I had a similar idea a few years back with some scrap pattern bar pieces, but never followed up--just left it sitting in the 'try it someday' pile.

Now I'll brush off the dust and go with the 'flow'.

Thanks for sharing, Laurie.

Thanks Brad!

Re: Boiled Glass Idea

Hi Saracen, I'm not very familiar with the 'boiled glass' technique, but are you placing a dam around the perimeter? Posting your set-up and the firing schedule you intend to use may help gather some replies... Best of luck! warm regards, Eric p.s. Never apologize for the metric numbers. Maybe one d...

Hi Osnat, though I've only read the book, and not put it all into practice, I enjoyed this book regarding Pate De Verre: http://www.amazon.com/P%C3%A2te-Verre-Kiln-Casting-Glass/dp/0965145832/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366436016&sr=8-1&keywords=pate+de+verre+fenton It's a fascinating way to...

Thanks, Cynthia.

Do you know what is happening to the elements when salts evaporate in a kiln?

I'm curious what chemically happens to the elements. I should've paid more attention in my high school chemistry class!

Paper Mache / Papier Mache

Okay, I think I know the answer here, but I wanted to make sure someone else hasn't had a bad experience, and ruined their kiln... My toddler and I made a big (make that huge!) mountain and tunnel out of paper mache for his train set. We've got the first layers on, and they're taking days to dry. Yo...

Hi Cynthia,

I'm not familiar with float, being a bullseye fuser, but your results in that piece are intriguing. I'd love to see your final results, if you can/care to share.

Re: Thin Opaque Bullseye

Hi Dairy, There are many of us that've played with the stacking technique, which is a lot of fun. I've done a little of it, though not extensively; I was fortunate not to have the issues you're describing. what sorts of schedules are you firing? I notice the notes on your photo of a top-temp of 1450...
