kilncasting boro glass

Has anyone tried to cast boro glass? Please share your experience: top temperature, mold recipe, annealing cycle, etc... I need to make an outdoor sculpture that will be exposed to direct sunlight in a hot climate where sudden showers and hail are common in the summer. Any advice is welcome! PS - I ...

Flower pot melting debit at top temperature

Hi all! Is there a a prescription of how much glass would flow from an aperture of a certain size for a given time and temperature? I'm about to cast 8 to 10kg (17 to 22 pounds) of S96 glass from a flower pot into a mould with a core. Because of the core, I will close the stock hole in the center an...

Re: Optical Glass from XYZ

I notice several contradictions in the papers that come along with it and as i'm going to fire something very big the length of the whole program may vary more than 2 weeks... 1. Softening Point - according to the "Glass Properties.doc" paper it is 704C, but in the E-book and in the "...

Casting and Annealing over 20cm/8in

Hi all! I'm about to cast a head with part of a chest where my thickest part is 23cm thick ... Should I calculate a ratio based on the BE table (ending at 20cm) or are there any other ways? Thanks! Here are 2 pictures of the plaster model of the sculpture. It is a life size figure of a young boy - 1...

I always pour my moulds around the model ending with a heavy solid block and never get suckies.

strenght of drilled holes for hanging

Hi!

I may get a commission for which I'm thinking to hang down 3 fused panels 7by2.5 feet each and 110-120pounds each. 12mm thick glass. If I hang them from 3 holes (on each), will the glass survive its own weight?

Thanks!

Re: Tech needed for casting leaving a sandy skin.

Hi Paul, Some of this was discussed just before new year here: http://www.warmglass.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=27066 I think on page 2 there is my recipe for kiln sand casting... If you want the sand to stick to the glass, just do not add anything for separation. As for sea/river sand; yes - ...

Re: Cold Polishing

Good advice by Lucho...I find cold-working with a hand held machine is very challenging, precisely because of the variations in pressure and angle, dwell time, etc. The first challenge is to get the surface totally flat. Ronny, I disagree here - the only surface that must be flat is the bottom of t...

Re: annealing schedules for large kiln cast sculptures

Lucho, I went to your website and looked around. This method of kiln sand casting you use, did you use it to cast "17 Houses of the Holy 5" for instance? Hugh No, this one is hot cast; if you see clear glass of good transparency in my work then it is hot cast. Kiln sand cast are "Cas...

Re: You might be a newbie if.....

After grinding your nails you need to polish them as well... I'm doing it for over 15 years!

And please, I need the copy right permit for printing this one out here in Bulgaria.

Re: I can't find the reason for my devit problem

Can you say if your kiln is responding accordingly to the program? If only one element is gone or one phase (in 3 phase circuits) is low (voltage) or bad contact it may cause temperature differences in the kiln beyond the thermo-couple ability to read... Then following Cynthia's, post I used to have...

Re: Q: Annealing around trapped air

I'm behind Dave... I had a piece with trapped air around an inclusion which I gave to cover its back with mirror amalgam, and as they use vacuum in these chambers, it broke from the bubble. However, if you are not going to force your pieces to an opposite vacuum extrema, an adequate annealing should...

Re: Surface Issues

Not so long ago, I used to ask my granny to sit in front of my old Soviet kiln, read a book she likes and check the temperature every now and then: " if it drops 5dgrC below 'X' turn it on, if it gets 5dgrC above 'X' turn it off " - and so on for 2-3 hours and then off, relying on insulati...
