That's like me and detail. Everytime I finish a piece the next one is going to be simpler and when I finish the model, Marc is asking me...I thought this one was going to be simple?

I haven't ever had one break once it was installed and never had any refused by inspectors. I imagine if it received a hard blow to a spot where it was cut the deepest it might blow, but so far it hasn't happened to any of our pieces. We will use laminated glass whenever possible (when edges will no...

Thanks for the input. Our site is hosted by Earthlink and I have corresponded with their support group, laid the whole thing out in detail, they even looked at the stats. Told me they would have to refer it to some specialist tech guy and he would get back to me, which never happened. Have never got...

I gotta say, I agree with Dennis for the most part too. When we started our architectural etched glass commission studio we had an idea, not a business plan. No one else was doing it. We had a dinky compressor and a gravity feed sandpot. We marketed by doing a few local art shows a year and calling ...

We carve on 3/8" and 1/2" tempered glass all the time and have never blown a piece. I wouldn't try it on 1/4" though.

In the mid-80's, we did a commission that had 21 different fossil forms cast in clear Blenko crystal glass and glued onto the surface of the panels. They ranged in size from about 8.5" diameter x 2" tall (smallest) to about 13" x 10" x 3" tall (largest). We used a flat lap t...

need webmaster help!

I am having an unusual problem with my website that I have no idea what to do about. I use the Urchin software to track my web stats and I had been averaging 400 - 800 visitors a week. Last December, the week of the 19 - 25, I had nearly 10,000 visitors registered in the stats. It gradually declined...

You might find it difficult to succeed in your glass venture when you are working full time at another job. Any job or venture, to be successful, needs your full attention. when we first started our architectural etched glass business, my partner would take the occassional pert-time job to help supp...

I just had an experience with this. I have been picked up by a new gallery for me. I am told that it is a very good contact to have so I am happy about it. I seem to be in good company. I got an e-mail from the owner the other day saying there had been some real interest in one of my high end pieces...

Havoc stinks?!? Actually, it's 'wreak havoc'.

Etching: eroding the surface of glass with some form of hydroflouric acid OR sandblasting etching is not a specific process but a result. Pate de verre: using fine to medium frit (no larger than BE frit size 2) with a binding agent to make a paste and filling the mold. Literally translated, pate de ...

No I don't make my own frit, although I did before it was commercially available. I use Bullseye. There are all kinds of 'binders'. I use gum arabic. Other artists use CMC which is a cellulose product. I didn't care for the white stuff it left in my finished glass but it was very tacky. I have heard...

A year or so ago, I found out that the Higuchis (the Japanese pate de verre artists) had a book, so I ordered it. Oh my God! Why do I even bother? It depressed me so much that it took me over a year before I could look at it again, which I did just this last weekend. And then it was in the context o...

On the edge of sleep. Sometimes I remember these, sometimes not. My hope is that the ones I don't remember will resurface when I am ready for them. On the eliptical at the gym. Bored, I try to occupy my mind. Also while I drive. I have a sketch book that sometimes I will try to work out a series in ...

firing schedule

Our schedule is divided into 3 parts. First we dry the mold by raising the temp from room to 300° (75°/hr) and hold for 3 hrs. Then we raise it to 1100° (100°/hr) and hold for 3 hrs. Next we cast the glass by raising to 1650° (550°/hr) and holding, in this case, for 3 hrs. Annealing and coolin...

Thanks Haydo. I do actually, but it's very loose and constantly on the edge of chaos. Mostly native and other perennials with some annuals thrown in now and then. Takes up most of the yard. Lots of birds, butterflys, little reptiles, and insects.
