Re: FRIT SIZES for PATE DE VERRE Q
on this situation of the frit packing well, i was under the assumption that the frit is glued in, thus bonded to one another, but then im wondering how much space is taken up by the glue, which will be filled by the melting glass, is this where the very very very thin glue comes in handly, for makin...

Re: adding design elements to a pate de verre (?) bowl.
I saw a beautiful DAUM bowl I surmised had been cast. It had flower design elements around the top 1/3 and I was wondering if you could cast the design elements first, then attach them to your wax up of your vessel, invest, rid mold of wax then cast the vessel after packing with frit or pot melting...

Thank you Delores.......I'm still in the experimentation stage with the visuals and appropriate mold material. My initial plaster molds gave me some problems (not sure of the age or viablity of the plaster). If these clay cup forms don't work, I'll go back to my 50/50 mix with a fresh bag of plaste...

Thanks Charlie for the info on mixing. I didn't know you could let the wet components sit for that long without it going off. The calcining temperature is the point they heat crushed gypsum rock to make the plaster in the first place. That's the point that all of the bound water is driven off and y...

[quote="Simon"]I've been experimenting with 50:50 hydrocal silica open face molds for filling with frit and fusing. Simon molds will crack from being to wet or too dry are you using the manufacturers recommended plaster to water ratio? It isn't the size of your piece as that isn't that lar...

Re: A Burning Question
As an aside, for all you casting fiends, opps, friends, I've been designing a jewelry box with a nautical theme. I know some things about rope work after 20 years in the Navy, so it was just a matter of time before I took all the advice Delores has given me and cast a knot or two. The trick is to g...

Hi again John... Most casters I know use a 50/50 mix by volume of #1 Pottery Plaster and 200 mesh silica flour. By weight is slightly better, but I just put bigger scoops of silica and slightly smaller scoops of plaster to approximate by weight. You can get both ingredients at your local ceramics s...

[quote="Phil Brown"] Hi Phil, I use victory brown but there are some things to consider --- it's pertroleum based and I steam outside not in my kiln. I melt in a crock pot on low. If you use high you can smell the fumes (beware of that). Get a wax fact sheet regarding safety. Search the ar...

[quote="Tony Smith"]I would like to initiate a discussion about Technique Ownership. I don't want it to be a controversial topic, but one that is thought provoking and will establish some commonly-agreed-to guidelines for the rest of us to use in the future. Tony, This is a good thread and...

Well...here I am, I finally decided on a new kiln. I went over to Marty's at Centre DeVerre and picked up my new JenKen Oval 13. After a stressfull proceedure of unloading it and getting it into the shop, it's now all set up and ready to go. Up until now I have been using an older ceramic kiln with...

Re: Pestle and mortar for crushing glass
I am new to casting glass and am looking into having a pestle and mortar made for crushing glass. This may seem very archaic but would be a vast improvement on what I do now (too embarrased to describe this!). Unfortunately machinary to crush glass would have to be imported and would be too expensi...

Thanks for your imput and everyone. The bronze effect was caused by mixing black, iradised black and aventuriene green. I had hoped that the colors would have been more obvious rather than an all over bronze look, but that one held up in the mold. The other dress/body mold was constructed the same ...
