have the form made as an untapered cylinder, but split it vertically, and have tabs welded to the outside of the split that would let you wire it tight. After the pot melt, you would cut the wire, and gently open the ring. It pays to make friends with good stainless fabricators! A local metal fabri...

Judy, I used to do that too but thought maybe I was just fooling myself. Now it seems that I'm favored by the air side gods because I rarely have even a haze problem much less devit. I don't do the water test anymore. However I am looking for a short wave UV light now because I want to be more preci...

Cheryl,

"Entwined" feels balmy while "Ocean Breeze" is so cool and fresh.

Link worked fine for me. (high speed internet connection).
Your slide shows also functioned a little shakey on my computer.

Congratulations.

I find the ring saw doesn't cut clean enough to go straight to fire polish.
I grind all cuts and refine my shapes before firepolishing.

A couple of folks told you you need to keep the rod in place for fire polishing. I always fire polish without anything in the channel. I fire polish at 1300 F and my channels stay open. Try it. It will save some time.

I buy pin frogs at Michael's. They run $3.99 (+tax) I contacted the distributor (or manufacturer) on the packaging label and the didn't offer any discount for bulk purchase. I also did some searching on google and the thomas register and came the the conclusion that pin frogs are going to cost me $3...

Carla, There should be an album labeled "Glass Blocks". It's there when I click on the link. Size of hole? I used a 2" diamond core drill bit. The first blocks I've drilled are not fire polished but I do intend to polish future drilled blocks. I also bought a small glass block vase a ...

What a timely question. Last week I started recycling glass block into vases, small aquariums and terrariums. What I want to do next is drill a small hole near the top of the "back" side in order to hang the block on the wall. Bert is correct. I determined if the blocks were tempered (not) ...

Thanks Bert and Ellen for the very helpful and informative comments. I should research my local building codes. And the tips about wet tempered glass and the relative weakness of 1/4" laminated glass is very much appreciated. Do either of you write disclaimers into your contracts? I'm thinking ...

We carve on 3/8" and 1/2" tempered glass all the time and have never blown a piece.
but is the glass still strong or is the safety factor compromised?

The laminated safety glass is probably my safest approach.

That's what I thought. I think my project can be made with laminated safety glass and I can do the piece minus the big bang.
Thank you, Brock.

Thanks Brock,
My guess is that the frost does not compromise the safety feature of the glass? Also at what depth of blast is it considered carving?

Sandblasting tempered glass

I think I've read somewhere, maybe here on this forum, that tempered glass can not be sandblasted. Am I correct? A local commercial glass company tells me that tempered glass can be sandblasted. I say the glass has to be sandblasted before tempering. Any advice on this issue is appreciated. Thanks.

Are you familiar with ceramic fiber paper? You can get fiber paper in small, maybe 4" x 6" sheets from your glass supplier. I like the 1/8" thick paper. Cut it in narrow strips as wide as you want your channel to be. When you are stacking your glass for fusing, include a strip of this...

Nutty Dave, I have a problem with your assessment of the nature of the dark core of the broken saucers. Do all your broken saucers show this dark core? You said you thought the dark core was the result of the manufacturer cutting production costs by dipping a cheaper clay into the terra cotta clay. ...

Are the Paradise and Sunshine paints transparent? My guess is that various colors fall somewhere in the opaque/transparent scale depending on the color and temperature. It's been my experience that some colors can take more heat and can vary in their translucency depending on firing temp.

You can use 1" or 3/4" screws to hold your layers together. I get them at Home Depot and they look like drywall screws. Make sure they're steel. If you drive the screws in from the top, countersink them and fill the hole with kiln wash. If they're not too long and you drive them up from th...
