Re: Chuck Close

Inspiration is for amateurs, so says artist Chuck Close in a video short about what he would say to his younger self. I tend to agree, its all about the work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxR3ELuZjLw I'm not sure I get "inspiration is for amateurs", but I get the gist from the rest of h...

Re: how do i charge a firing fee?

Long ago, in a galaxy far far away...I would fire projects for clients. $75.00 per firing (12 hour schedule start to finish). It's time you can't use your kiln for your own work, so your production time is being impinged upon. I would babysit the work. I would help load and unload as long as the wor...

Re: 3D printing with glass powder

...It really doesn't appeal to me to see something made more by a computer programmer rather than an artist / craftsman. It really takes the artist / "handmadeness" (yes I am creating my own word) right out of the equation. I am sure you could create a machine (if they haven't already) th...

Re: Ritsue Mishima in Architectural Digest

Maybe...just maybe what she is doing is about something re-conceptualized; re-imagined, re-discovered, re-interpreted. It's all been done before, just not by me. What makes it progressive is that you add your voice and your views to the mix. We all stand on the shoulders of those who went before us,...

Re: Replace broken piece?

So I finally received the photo a few moments ago. My response was that it's obvious there was quite an impact to the piece so I can't take responsibility for it. I've offered to remake it and ship it, and quoted my regular price to do so. Thanks for all the great advice! broken.jpg That looks like...

Re: stencil cutter

Buy extra tips (or use Don's trick). I don't have a resistor, so my iron is always on full heat. Anyway...I use a hone (those diamond plated hones you can get from Harbor Freight) and resharpen the tips as they dull. http://www.harborfreight.com/3-piece-2-inch-x-6-inch-diamond-hone-blocks-36799.html...

Re: Bubbles.

Wow. I'm liking the Sheila Lebatt work. Haydo...Maybe Tom Patti? I saw some work of his several years ago at the Tacoma Glass Museum and it was all about that big bubble and how it optically distorted the horizon lines in the blocks. He's doing all sorts of stuff...but that bubble thing is in his ba...

Re: How Picky Are You?

I find something lacking in every piece I do. Gone too far, not far enough....something is missing, that line is too bold, the light logic is all wrong, blah blah blah.... But I don't toss them either. I figure it's progress I'm after. I'll never get to perfection. Never. So I might as well accept t...

Re: Sol's Sentences

Artists should be art-speak retarded. To be otherwise burdens them with the inexorable contraints of tradition and convention. They should be shielded from time of birth from the tyranny of expectations so that they can fly unencumbered into the vastness of the 'mystical'. Now there you go using re...
