Re: Cutting Vermuculite Board

I cut 1 inch VB with a table saw but I have never had good luck cutting good inside circles. I usually just rough the circle and use a wood rasp to clean it up. Remember to wear a respirator, that stuff puts off a ton of dust! As an aside, I have been using VB for my kiln shelves for over 15 years n...

Mystery Holes After Second Firing

I fired the first pieces of a new design over the weekend. There were a total of five pieces (8" circles). Four were two pieces of BE with either black or clear irid on the bottom (irid down) and an opal on the top. The fifth piece was irid-down on irid-up. All five pieces had been previously f...

Hi Ruth... I am fairly sure that Sierra makes the PMC kiln that Rio-Grande sells. I have two of these and have fired boyh PMC and glass in them regularly. The elements are enclosed as a fdunction of the design so that the whole heating chamber can be replaced at one time. When fuseing glass I use a ...

Linda, my first kiln was an Olympic (I still use it) model 1814 I think. They are really known for their ceramic kilns --with side elements only-- although I understand they are now making glass units. I was/am perfectly happy with the kiln except for the obvious disadvantages of the side-only eleme...

E 1010 Epoxy experience

Is anyone familiar with or have experience with E-1010 epoxy. I got a small sample this weekend and am hopeing that it will be a suitable replacement for GE Silicone. The folks who gave it to me claim that it is outstanding other than the short mix life (10 min.) I an looking for placeing feet on sm...

Done on my Vinyl cutter

I do this on a regular basis since I have a vinyl cutter as part of my real job doing computer graphics. It is fairly straight forward, you need a vector art file created from something like Adobe Illustrator. The paths have to simplified and you have to know how to "weed" the vinyl. If an...

Glass Places to See In UK

I will be going to London (actually Singlewell) to visit my daughter for a long Christmas holiday. I am anxious to know of any "must see" glass places while I am there. Anywhere within a 200km distance is fine. I expect to do some exploreing anyway. Thanks!

Converting from Siphon To Pressure Pot with Questions

This evening I converted my Skatt cabinet with the built in Siphon gun to a pressure pot that I bought from Harbor Freight. The whole job was about 2 hours but I have questions. First the control valve for the nozzle is a knife type (prolly not the right term) instead of a gun type like the siphon s...

I just got an Oval 9 which is the same Kiln only not as deep. I did not get the extra bars, but I suspect Clifford has the answer i.e. for extra support if required. One additional thing I would do is take the frame out and have adjustable casters welded on the bottom of the frame. You will want to ...

The question of pre-fireing an empty kiln is interesting. I was told by Olympic when I got my first kiln that I SHOULD pre-fire to 1700 degrees. When I got my new Jen-Ken oval, the folks at Jen Ken said NO, that was not necessary! I think it has something to do with the elements and the way they are...

Can I mill a kiln shelf?

I just got a new Jen-Ken Oval-9 kiln (thru CDV) but the shelves are a mess - big scratches and gouges and severely pitted in many places. Jen Ken is going to get new ones but no idea when for certain. Has anyone tried milling down the surface of one of these dudes. They are fairly flat with a slight...

The Heller Gallery is an outstanding visit! If I remember right they are on 14th street. There is a gallery in Englewood, just across the river that is also very good. While in NYC try "Wo Hop's" on Mott street for the worlds greatest Won Ton Soup!! Have a great trip.
