I wasn't adding to Brad's list, Brock. Just using this location as an example (which I said). Some people told me that part of what made last year's conference more fun for them was that Portland was a walking around city, and that there were neat places, restaurants, etc. to visit. Some people like...

As a DC area resident (in Maryland) I'm not going to vote but think that the location could make a difference, and could be worth the extra bucks. (Maybe with roommates?) Just an Example: in Bethesda the Hyatt is on the Metro line and within walking distance of a couple hundred restaurants, outdoor ...

I bought the Toyo custom grip, sure I'd love it, but can't use it. In a short time my hand aches - but that's probably because I have a slightly messed up thumb joint/hand and need a wider grip (same with pens). So I use the Toyo pistol grip and like it. Seems like the custom grip would let you move...

I sand before applying kilnwash. But I wear an appropriately rated respirator (not paper mask that gives a false sense of security). If I sanded afterwards, then I have kilnwash particles to inhale and would still wear a respirator. Same when cutting fiber paper, carving Kaiser Lee board or cleaning...

Hi Dave - Like was mentioned, press out excess moisture between newspaper. Exchange wet newspaper for dry and repeat several times. This will allow you to speed dry it with good results. (Wear latex gloves since it is incredibly drying.) You can form it around something or build a shape without any ...

Re: best kilns??

should I get a viewing hole? A peephole and viewing window are different. A peephole is a small hole drilled into the wall of the kiln. A viewing window (in JenKens) is a 2-1/2 inch quartz (?) window. You can see most of the shelf through it, but almost nothing through the peephole. When the kiln i...

Re: copyrights and suchlike

Lia- this has come up before on this board and has been resolved thusly: Brian and Jenny own trademarks on processes, all of them, especially the cheatin ones. I own all rights on bowls and maybe platters. I forget who got the rights on heat and gravity, maybe Brock. The rest is up for grabs. Marty...

I guess this is OT, but if you love the horses of Lascaux, look at Luann Udell's sculptures. http://www.durable-goods.com/ (Click on New Work.) She does other lovely work but look at the 3D Lascaux horses. We have one and want a small herd of three, but have to figure out how to protect the one we h...

Ooooo, it's on sale! I think Granite City VT sold it for a little higher than Granite City MN does now. Steph, sorry about the URL. It's http://www.granitecitytools.com in Minnesota and Kent is good to speak with. I'd guess pads up to 800 would work if you're going to fire polish slightly or add a ...

Doug, thanks much - I'm on the right trail then. Do you actually use the buffing pad? Or a possibly slightly higher quality set that goes to 3,000 would be worth the extra $9.00. :?: Steph, Granite City Vermont (granitecitytoolvt.com) used to carry the Felisatti but does not any more. Granite City M...

Felisatti Granite City mystery solved. When I called back to order, Kent told me he wondered if those of you who were told Granite City doesn't carry the Felisatti WG20 called their Vermont location instead of Minnesota. Vermont used to carry it but no longer does. The two locations operate independ...

Lani, great thread. Added to the host's and teacher's "deliver what you promise" is "deliver what is implied." Barbara Muth said it - enough classroom control to deal with the hopefully rare disruptive or monopolizing student. While being extremely patient with The Disruptor is s...

Thanks Doug! Granite City is holding my grinder until I let them know which pads I want. I was surprised to hear you don't have to use any abrasive medium with the angle grinder - just water. We watched Steve Klein completely hand finish a piece of glass just using diamond pads and water, but he end...

I talked to Granite City Friday evening and they have them. The person I talked to said he was literally looking at a stack of about 20 as we were speaking. He said they had been back-ordered for a while, but had plenty now. If you call again and are told they are out, feel free to ask for Kent Brow...

Nikki and the Microscope

I had the honor of visiting Nikki O'Neill's fungus laboratory last week, and there was this very new and very amazing microscope . . . (also a neat antique one). If someone would send her two small samples (silicon carbide and aluminum oxide), bet she could get the differences in a photo and post th...
