I'd be interested in seeing what you find out. I'm experimenting on mine -- I figure I have nothing to lose at this point!

Ah, hell, I was hoping for a Plan B before I get to this point! I could flip it over, but the backside has a funky unpleasant texture that I don't like. I do have a second board still in the box, so Plan Z will be to start over with that one. Pretty expensive muck-up, though! Maybe I'll just keep fo...

Duraboard repair

I was really lovin' life with my new Duraboard (2", HD) until I tried a hi-fire on it ... long story short, I've now got massive gouges in it. Per a suggestion in the old archive, I made a paste out of kiln wash and rigidizer and applied it with a putty knife. A week later I tried sanding it sm...

I'm also a sole proprietor, with no problems (so far!).

I did get a business insurance policy to cover liability in case of any problems. (Personal assets are still at risk beyond the limits of the policy, though.)

I'm also in the process of rigidizing fiberboard. Applied the rigidizer, let it dry , fired it once, flipped it over, fired again. (and holy cow does it smoke! and stink!) What should it look like when it's done? It's white on both sides, but still seems fragile. Not "crumbly" like it was ...

Oops ... thanks for the correction.

Knowing only a little about the relationship between those two organizations, this may have been a bigger faux pas than I realize!

new business forum

FYI ... the ACC has started up a forum similar to the one that The Crafts Report sponsored. Similar in style, a lot of the same people. A nice alternative since the TCR board is still kaput.

Robert Genn on pricing

This week's Genn newsletter struck a note with me. Useful advice to all of us!

http://www.painterskeys.com/letters.asp?let=040217

I'm still pondering the advice on "price only on size" -- maybe it applies more to painters than it would to glass artists?

If you have other sheets of each, you can compare the thicknesses. I use a lot of both, and can feel the difference -- I believe it's the Spectrum that's slightly thinner, and the BE/Urob that's thicker. (but I'm not in the studio right now)

If you get new original molds made, would you be able to re-slump the pieces and submit them to the jury again? Sometimes the design lends itself to that.

use of diamond hand pad

I have a couple pieces with a burr on the edge -- a little sharp bit that's very unappealing. Small enough that it seems a waste to grind and go through a whole fire-polishing cycle ... is this something that a diamond hand pad would clean up?

But now I've learned that they only test 1-in-10, so if I see a sheet that's got that distinctive corner-cut but isn't marked compatible, I'll definitely know to NOT pick that sheet. The reason that they only test every nth sheet is that they are looking for the change from compatible to non-compat...

Rats. I was afeared that would be the answer. Thanks for the quick responses, I'll make room for a test in tomorrow's kiln load.

COE of non-tested BE?

I have a bunch of scrap BE that I'd like to use for fusing. Does the non-tested BE tend to be COE90, or is it more random? Specifically I'm looking at 0301 (pink opal) but also wondering in general.

(I know, I should test it myself ... but the magless deadline is getting
closer!)

cutting Duraboard

I finally bit the bullet and bought some HD Duraboard to use as a shelf in the bottom of my Evenhead 2541. What should I use to cut it down to fit? Some type of saw ... but what type? And how much clearance should I leave on each side? Will I need to make changes to my firing schedules once I start ...

accounting for donations

I've just donated a few pieces for a charity auction and now I'm wondering how do I deal with them on my taxes? I do a Schedule C ... can I add a miscellaneous expense for "donations"? Advertising?

blending colors

I'm stumped on this and would welcome some ideas. I'm making a stained glass panel for a client -- a garden scene with a morning glory vine running up one side. She can't find a blue color that she likes for the morning glories. The closest we've come is the color of BE0334 or BE0114 ... but she wan...
