Tony,

I use a fibreboard shelf and do go to full fuse: 1480 degs for 20 mins... using both opals and transparents. Never had a whit of wrinkling! What do YOU use? Are you always firing at least 1/4" thickness? Wondering about glass shrinkage...

The new thin fire does not curl up or shrink. While it does not tear, it will wrinkle in the center of bigger pieces, a foot square and up or so. It is dense enough to cause bubble problems and it will also plug up a vaccuum filter about five times as fast as the old stuff. In spite of all that, I ...

BE's new thinfire is excellent stuff! It performs brilliantly, I've not had any problems whatsoever (and I've nearly finished the roll). I highly recommend it...

Not To Miss: Kirstie Rea at Pittsburgh Glass Center!!!

As a dedicated Kirstie Rea fan, I just HAD to post an announcement about her class at the Pittburgh Glass Center this summer June 21 - July 3. Kirstie is an outstanding artist, a generous and dedicated educator, and one of the most thoughtful and inspirational women I have ever met. As her TA, I am ...

Kathie, I'll be at the same session, in Janusz W's course... Brock hit it right on the nose: Pilchuck is all about being smack dab in the middle of the most creative environment you can possibly imagine. Incredible conversations abound - in and out of the studio, in and out of your particular course...

Jackie, good thread you started. But everyone is talking about TECHNIQUE here. Technique is not inspiration. It is just technique. Nor is glass particularly interesting in and of itself. Heresy. Get away from it occasionally. Look elsewhere. I just got back from a trip out of town to visit a cerami...

Because these pieces are 60 inches long and no COE 90 is available in that length [ I also have to do one 87 inches } I am cutting sheets , laying them out to get the length . And.... ramp up AFAP from 1240 (or whatever works for you) to your full fuse - again, taking the work quickly thru the 1300 devit range. Don't dilly dally there!

Hello Robert, I do a fair number of pretty thick (BE glass) pieces - 3/4 to 1" thick panels - and have found the following steps to be helpful in preventing surface bubbling (which occurs sometimes anyway, for whatever reason): I pre-fuse 1/4 layers prior to stacking; for the (second) stack fir...

Re: Overspray vs. Devit

What is the most commonly used or should I say best performing overspray to use when fusing Bullseye glass. I'm having devit problems. I've cleaned the glass with 70% isopropyle alcohol, and have attempted to clean my kilns enviornment by high firing and venting. Still devits. So I must resort to o...

Doris,

Bullseye's new thinfire is reputed not to tear during firing... important if you're firing on a fibre shelf and can't use kilnwash.

Re: raining crud

I just got a new jenken oval 13 kiln & it's great, except for one thing. it seems to drop alot of crud from the top during firing. I vacuum it with a brush attatchment after each fire but by the time i'm ready to close it up, it's already raining again. Is this common with a new kiln? Will it g...

Watch out for marking and grinding... Sharpie will not fire out when left on a ground edge. On these edges, when sandwiched, it will feed into the seam during firing. If you DO get sharpie marks onto a ground edge, remove them with acetone and you'll be home free!
