Good news about the shades, Phil. I was hoping that mold would work out for you. I DO plan on posting images of the hot rod when it's done. Are you kidding me! And I don't think it will be too far off now. We've got some fancy multi-step Plum-Crazy-Purple paint out there and two months ago he made t...

That's great--very clear. Obviously you don't get it powder coated with the glass on there so what did you use to test mount the pieces onto the frame? Do you mount it with silicone for the final assembly? I've used silicone and found it to be reliable but so far its been on a big surface area and ...

Amy, here are some snapshots (post-brawl) of one of the mountings being built:

We have this issue too, Amy. After a while he made a template so he "wouldn't have to figure out the measurements next time" but he realized that we'll never need that template - nothing's ever the same size. And to make it worse, nothing I make is ever exactly square  so all that sil...

Thanks guys. The piece is mounted to powder-coated aluminum, Amy. The panels are spaced with 2" aluminum blocks that make the glass appear to float away from the surface a little bit. I draw the bases out on paper (insert arguement here) and Roger builds them, then I have them powder-coated. Fu...

Little Joe

Here's a recent piece that actually worked out the way I wanted. http://dell.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b3771acbc4dd (Although, I did end up flipping and firing the working deep piece and at least it's got a flat face - still have a little coldworking I want to do on it before I re-post that o...

I like American Craft, American Style, and Glass (put out by Urban Glass in NY, but there are many others, too. Art in America is good. And I don't recall the names, but I remember seeing several Australian puplications that look worthy of subscription, but I haven't done it yet. Maybe someone will ...

It was Mimi!!! That's who had the studio disaster! My goodness - Joseph, and anyone else worried about storage for glass, read this thread:

Everything I make gets sandblasted as the first step. From there, depending on the particular surface I want, I either hand polish, carve, polish with discs, or a combo of all of those. If there is a certain look you saw someplace that you like or want to know more about, feel free to specify and I'...

Doctac - hello . .

I've tried three times to respond to your email question, but it keeps bouncing back. :-k When you said "tile" I thought you meant tile, like backsplash tile. So disreguard the advise I gave you if you were asking about Joseph's Pride. That piece has nine panels, each with a different text...

It will be less shiney because:

If you've fused and sandblasted and want to keep a matte finish during a low firepolish or slump, you may fire to 1150. Els is saying that when the rest of the glass is where she wants it, the black begins to shine up again.

Jim- that is a nice piece and I don't mind the squares (unlike someone else whose initials are Jackie Beckman! lol).

Given the fact that the paparazzi is chasing him all over Danburry, I suggest you take his advise, Jim. (even though he's wrong  )

OK Nanette and Nikki, I've got you added to the list. Dani, I've crossed you off. Dee - sorry, I must have missed your question somehow. I hadn't really planned on a due date yet because Brad doesn't know when or where we'll ship them yet. I figured as people finished them, we'd just keep adding the...

Jackie, Thanks again for the lamp mold. Reslumped the flattened taco and presto! I have a lamp shade. Didn't stick at all either. I watched it like a hawk and stopped it at just the right point. You'd never know the sucker has gone through 3 slumping cycles. Drill a hole here and I should be in bus...

BTW Jackie, I liked your experiment. Another try to push out some of the bubbles and I think you will have something quite nice. Phil Thanks Phil. I'm anxious to try the one I build face down. I think with the strips being at the face, so that I can blast and texture them, then the imagery being at...

Still rather a newbie here -- let me ask an unartistic question: What kind of electric bill do you have?? I am in Southern Calif. Though I would love to do some of this type of work (right now I just make jewelry in a Hot Box) -- I can't imagine what the electric costs would be for making pieces th...

Jackie, my first reaction would be to refire the same piece face down and try to get all the bubbles out or at least toward the back. Then, since the front is now textured anyway, go to work on it with your grinder. It's too nice to relegate to the "mistakes" bin...............Jim Yes Jim...

Jackie, 25 degrees and hours is wayyy slow. On pieces that go from 2" to 1" I go as fast as 100 degrees and hour and that's on the 5th firing. As for your anneal, in my kilns, I would go AFAP to 980 soak for 4 or 5 hours, 10F hr to 900 soak for half the time, 20F hr to 600 no soak, 100F h...

Cindy-Next-Door and I were just talking about this at the bus stop - it sure is nice to have someone to brainstorm with! She was a huge help in getting me to see the parts of it that ARE good. Anyway, I think I'm going to do another one. This time I'm going to build it upsidedown - I'm used to that,...

Working Deep MESS

The next two pieces I'm working on are very involved and will take quite some time, so while I'm doing the assembly on those, the kiln was empty - hate that, so I threw in an experiment. I have wanted to play around with working deep for about a year and a half but haven't had a chance. I figured I'...
