Tony,

You should talk to Marty at CDV then, because he specifically told me that power goes to the relays first then to the controler. So, the kiln could be firing without the contoler being on. That's why I always unplug my kilns if I'm going away for more than a day.

You might want to talk with Marty at CDV, a board sponsor. He knows huge amounts of stuff about kilns and controlers and is willing to help. In the past he has told me that if my kilns are plugged in and turned off they can still start without me knowing it. I believe this is on Bartletts, I have a ...

Is there a contract?

If there is there should be a section saying how much notice you have to give before removing work.

If not, well, that's not a good thing. IMO

What about plaster silica. I don't know much about this though, I imagine it wouldn't last very long. But if you put fiberglass in it or wire that might help.

Good to know your kiln arrived. Yes you can make your own clay molds. I have made many but my experience has been different than Jerry's. I use Raku clay to make the mold and air dry it. This takes several days and I ususally slowly unwrap it from plastic wrap because I don't have a damp room. Once ...

Hi Cinda, As a general rule of thumb you slump into ceramic and over stainless steel. This rule, however, can be broken... If the mold you ordered is shaped like a wok you should be able to slump into it. The issue with molds is expansion and contraction. Ceramic contracts less than glass and SS con...

Is it in the dictionary?

I don't think it's even a word!

It annoys me too Marty.

They could easiely say people who make fine craft, somehow that doesn't seem so demeaning (sp?) as crafter.

I agree Brock, there was one of her dresses at SOFA last year. They are huge, bigger than life size. Truly amazing to see in person.

Marty,

I would think though that if you used the UV glue you would still see the crack. I would assume then the piece wouldn't sell.

I'm with Brock, try to grind and polish it out. Or break it into pieces and use it in something else.

David,

Could your problem be a mineral in your water?

I have a very high lead content in my water so am careful to even clean off the water with isopropal alchohol.

As far as I know copper would work fine. Keep in mind it will patina just like copper gutters and copper flashing. If you don't want it to patina you will have to clear coat it some how.

Hey Jerry, Does the building you are thinking of look like an upside down step pyramid? I'm trying to think of the building you are talking about and can't remember. I drive down there all the time but haven't paid close enough attention. I'll look next time it's less than 5 min. from my house. Amy...

Ah, Amy, my memory is held together with duct tape and chewing gum, so it's risky taking it on too long a trip. I think so. A double step back? Southwest corner of a block? Shops at street level? Main entrance at the corner? Not sure that it is on Water; could be a block or two east. The building sh...

There is a building in downtown Milwaukee (Water Street?) that is Corten. The first floor is recessed to provide shelter so there was an orange drip line on the sidewalk. They may have etched it off the concrete after the steel had aged. Corten is primarily a structural steel and may not be availab...

Thanks everyone. I am going to be casting some high fire slabs so there will actually be very little color, but I will definately take the color thing into account. I hadn't thought of that. They are about 1" thick or a little more. I want the actual glass pieces to be romovable so I probably w...

Thanks Bert,

I will check out the steel you mentioned. What I'm envisioning are brackets to hold the glass where I want it and allow it to be removed for cleaning. These brackets would be mounted onto the base structure by either welding or some sort of mechanical attachment.

Out door sculpture

Hi everyone, I was wondering what kind of possible difficulties I would have for installing a large outdoor sculpture in a garden. I have a possible commission from my neighbor for this and would like to hear some advise before I start designing it. Remember that it will probably need to withstand a...
