Re: Show opening last night

I am fascinated by the wall piece (athough it's all nice!) - is it a series of pyramids or is that an optical illusion? Hi Cheryl, They are not pyramids but optical illusion created by using layers of tinted glass. It's fun watching people go up to the piece - most of them will then look at it from...

Show opening last night

A year in the making this invitational show with 11 Maui artists - mostly painters - opened last night at Viewpoints Gallery here on island. I feel so privileged to being a part of this group; over the past year we all participated in a series of documented seminars led by Dick Nelson to "promo...

Re: Adhesive for acrylic French cleats - update

And sorry I didn't see this, either, Karuna. I've been using a two-part UV epoxy on these, and am looking right now at three 8-pound pieces I cleated up maybe 4 years ago, still hanging on my office wall. I used Loctite Impruv 349 for those (http://www.amazon.com/Loctite-Impruv-Light-Adhesive-BOTTL...

Re: Adhesive for acrylic French cleats - update

Karuna, Finally I let it cure for about a week before I tried hanging. It's been hanging for over a year now. So the silicone can work. I am interested in the glue you used though, can you tell me why you chose it and how expensive it is? w. Hi Carol, I picked the Devcon 5 minute Epoxy because it c...

Re: Adhesive for acrylic French cleats - update

As I had no takers on my question, I went ahead and did the following: - sandblasted the backside of the glass where the cleat is going - sandblasted the backside of the cleat that is in contact with the glass - used Devcon 5 minute epoxy (which states that it bonds glass, plastic, etc) - let it cur...

Adhesive for acrylic French cleats - update

I had TAP Plastic make and ship me acrylic French cleats. I have some 1" thick glass tiles, about 4 lbs each. Got some new GE Silicone II premium glue (100% silicon). Cleaned glass with aceton and then alcohol before gluing on French cleat. Didn't cover whole surface with silicone to allow for ...

glaswizz wrote:Thanks. I've never drilled a hole in a ceramic mold before. Do I need a special bit? Does it have to be wet or anything like glass does?
I just used my Dremel with an old diamond bit; I think any small drill bit would do. No need for water.

Re: Bubble or "Tumor" Forming During Slump

I don't have a pic of the slump handy. I can post it later. The mold is this one... http://www.delphiglass.com/glass-molds/plates-platter-molds/10-rimmed-dinner-plate It has a single hole in the bottom. My first thought would normallybe the hole, but why would it have worked for the last 4 years or...

Do you have a picture of the mold/piece? You may need more than one hole in the bottom of the mold.

Fuhrman Glass Studios Inc wrote:Albers and his wife did quite a lot of stained glass when they were at Black Mountain in N.C. I have one of their books that shows a lot of their glass. It dealt with color and basic rectilinear shapes.
What is the title of the book? Would love to have a look at it.
Thank you.

Re: source for acrylic French cleats?

Karuna, if you don't need many, I have about a dozen left over from the original order by Barbara. Contact me if you need them urgently. Thank you for the offer, Faye. Much appreciated, but I do need a larger amount. TAP Plastic does custom cutting and will give me a quote on Monday. If that comes ...

Re: Vitrigraph modification

The flower pots which hold my glass usually have a 3/4"-1" hole in the bottom. I think having the same size hole in the kiln bottom would make things unnecessarily tight.

source for acrylic French cleats?

Does anybody know of a source to buy acrylic French cleats?
I saw in the archives that Barbara Muth used to sell them at one point but I have not been able to get a hold of her.
Thank you.

I don't think Thinfire would work; you need fiber paper.

Re: Vitrograph setup

Hi sheree, You would only use the metal sheet if you run the vitrigraph at a higher temp to pull stringers and the glass is hot enough to pretty much flow by itself. To pull canes or murrini you work at lower temperatures and pull straight down to control thickness. When I cut off the canes, I rest ...

Sea Urchin

Latest piece out of the kiln inspired by the beauty of sea urchin shells.
As some of you may recall from a post some weeks ago, the reds were a bit temperamental coming out of the vitrigraph kiln, but I fired this piece real conservatively and so far so good.

Re: Compressor question

I ended up buying a 30 gallon/2HP Husky Pro at Home Depot for $471, which works with 110V. It is much more quiet than the one I had before as it's belt driven. So far works great for me. Lowe's has a similar sized Kobalt one, but it had bad reviews.

Color theory and interaction

For the past nine month I have been having the priviledge of working with a group of Maui artists in preparation of an invitational show at the end of this year themed 'Color, Space & Light'. Most of them are accomplished painters but there is a sprinkling of other mediums represented. We have a...
