Ultrasonic machining of glass combines high frequency vibration combined with an abrasive slurry to very precisely remove material. There are numerous shops that can do ultrasonic drilling. In some cases they can gang drill many holes at on time. It requires a tool to be made for specific applicatio...

Paul, I've got the filters that uvp uses in their lights. In fact, I supply them. If you want to make your own I'll send you a piece. Glass is Corning/Kopp 9863 UV transmitting/ visible absorbing. It's very dense in color & you need a pretty intense light source to get any light through it. Let ...

I have tried to fuse optical grade 1st surface mirror and the aluminum goes away almost completely. It leaves kind of a bronze tint. I've tried mirror to mirror & mirror to plain float, and it all seems to go away. Tried it coated side up and it still turns brown but seems to be a krinkly brown ...

Volcanic glass

Anybody out there ever heard of volcanic ash glass? I just bought a 5" bowl on ebay that supposedly is made of volcanic ash from Mt. St.Helens. Says it was made from volcanic ash, from the fallout, fused at 2600 degrees to form volcanic glass. Handcast at Bullseye Glass in Portland. It has some...

The primary reason of grooves or ripples in face of disc is to hold coolant. They also provide for faster removal of stock. The finer the grit the less reason for grooves. If you're going to be just doing edges & bevels,I would reccomend no grooves. Crystalite is a good source for discs and grin...

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH LAVA CLOTH? I SUSPECT USING IT ON THE SHELF WITH GLASS ON TOP TO LEAVE PATTERN IN THE DOWN SIDE OF BASE GLASS. JUST CURIOUS.

I have a very easy solution to oil residue from cutters. Quit using it. I cut ALOT of glass & never use oil. I've tried it & get no different results. The only thing I got from it was oily glass. I do still wash everything before fusing, 1st in mild detergent, dry, then methyl alchohol wash ...

Another option in low-iron float is a product called optiwhite. I buy from Howard Glass in Worcester, MA. 508-753-8146 Talk to Jason. I think it's a little better than Starphire for clarity. It's available in 2,3,4,5,6,8,&10mm thick.

Paul,
Loctite 312,324,325 with 7075 activator. I use it all the time sets up in seconds no UV. If you can wait untill 1-24,1-25 I'll bring some to Austin for the adv. powder class. When you cement, make sure you remove mirror from tab. Cement tab only, then reattatch mirror after tab is cured.

Tony,
you might try scribing with a diamond scriber and then hit with a torch. I've cut microscope cover slips as thin as .005" thick with some success.

I just got a new jenken oval 13 kiln & it's great, except for one thing. it seems to drop alot of crud from the top during firing. I vacuum it with a brush attatchment after each fire but by the time i'm ready to close it up, it's already raining again. Is this common with a new kiln? Will it ge...

etch on temp. glass

Sorry, but I agree w/ Dean. When glass is heat tempered the stucture of the outer surfaces are where the tempering takes place. It only penetrates a few thousanths of an inch. Even a .005-.010 deep scratch significantly reduces the strength. A 1/32 deep etch is really asking for trouble. It might st...

electricity usage

Does anyone know how to calculate electricity usage for a kiln with digital control? Does it require a special meter to be attatched? Trying to figure how much it costs to operate for a full fuse cycle, slump cycle, & tack fuse cycle. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
