Re: re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Bessie is back together! I couldn't decide which option to take, so I did both...put a layer of clear over it, and dammed it. I'll have to cold work the edges now, but there is no trace showing that it had ever been broken. I used a very slow schedule of: 150-900-15 300-1100-0 100-1250-30 AFAP-1420-...

Re: re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Well, the kiln is done on my test tiles. I used tiles that were previous goof ups in my reject bin. I cut them in half, butted them back together, then I dammed one with fiber paper and kiln posts, the other I just put a layer of clear Tekta over the top of it, about 1/8th inch larger than the tile,...

Re: re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Thanks Valerie. I did think about that before I even started on it and considered not doing a black and white, but I just didn't want a brown cow!

Re: re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Oh my gosh, I didn't think of that. The things ya forget to think about! I used a different shelf that is much thicker than any of my others. I have no idea what kind it even is, it was in some stuff I bought from someone else, but it's at least twice the thickness of the other shelves I typically u...

Re: re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Thank you so much for the replies, guys! I was pretty sure I needed to dam it, but Kevin your idea of putting a piece of clear over it never occurred to me. I think I will do some experimenting with something from my scrap heap and see which works better. I spent a lot of time on this crazy cow, I r...

re-fusing a thermals shocked piece

Okay, I've spent hours searching, can't seem to find the answer I need, so I gotta ask. I stupidly took this piece out of the kiln too soon...I figured since it's about 98 degrees in my studio these days, it wouldn't hurt since the kiln temp said it was down to 102. Obviously I was wrong. I know how...

Re: Cutting curved glass

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was thinking a core bit would be the best, but as you say, needs to be well secured and all...it's a BIG bottle! At least I have something to tell this person. I might try it on a smaller bottle first and see if I can do that, then maybe....naw, I really don't want...

Cutting curved glass

This has nothing to do with fusing, but I'm wondering if any of you would know how to cut a hole in the side of a large glass bottle....think terrariums in the 70's.I have a client who found an old glass water bottle and wants to make a terrarium out of it. I have googled everything and can't find a...

alarm warning on jen ken

I'm at a friend's studio and need a quick answer ...she has a jen ken that keeps throwing an "FtC"...failure to cool alarm when it hits about 540 degrees on the way down. Any idea why it's doing this?

Re: TRANSPARENT FRENCH CLEATS

Havi, I had some done at the local acrylic place. Do you have an acrylic fabricator somewhere near you? Barbara did post a diagram or tutorial on them back when she had them made, but I don't have it anymore and it's probably lost from the archives. Maybe her website has it somewhere. It's useful to...

Re: Gray scum

Are you using thinfire shelf paper? I've never had it happen, but others have said it can cause a discoloration on glass. If so, you need to vent the kiln till the paper binders burn off. Are you scrubbing the pieces really well? Like, with a toothbrush or scrub pad....some times you think you've go...
