Re: Tekta not so clear...

I sometimes get little (really little) pieces of what I think is rust in my Tekta, causes imperfections when it shows up. Probably from the rollers when it's made.

Re: Fusing little dots

If you get kiln wash stuck on the bottoms, just throw the bunch into a basin of white vinegar for a few hours. It'll fall off. I've got a gallon of vinegar that I've been using and re-using for a few years now.

Re: Super Glue Question

Elmers Glue does the trick for me, just try to use the smallest amount possible. No need to water down.

Re: new cutting system needed--no more Morton's!

I bought the smaller Morton cutting boards, which attach together. Haven't used them yet because now I see that I need to buy another 2 to make a big board. So I'm still not sure how well they'll work, but I will try Tap before I buy the other two Morton boards. And thanks Jim for all the informatio...

new cutting system needed--no more Morton's!

I just found out that Morton is no longer making those big white cutting boards, which I've been using for years. Although I've cut back a lot of my production work, I still use that cutting system a lot. It's not unusual for me to cut up five or six sheets of glass a day--I need some way to easily ...

Re: Chihuly App

So this guy is moving his piece of glass by Chilhuly but has to stop at the store along the way. He's in the store for ten minutes and suddenly panics..."Oh no! I left my car unlocked!!". He rushes out and sure enough, there are now three Chilhuly's in his back seat. Sorry, this joke is re...

sending display set-ups to businesses

I fuse ashes and make either pendants or "keepsakes" for people with either pet or human ashes. Occasionally I'll get a request from a mortuary or crematorium for a display of some of my products, and if they seem serious I'll send something off to them. I usually send a number of my sampl...

Great stuff, thanks for posting it.
I've loved Chuck Close for years but never knew about the face blindness thing. Fascinating!

Re: Fused Glass Drawer Pulls

Go to one of the big building supply stores, like Home Depot, and check out drawer pulls. I've gotten some decent pulls and used them with my glass. Much cheaper then buying pulls made specifically to make glass drawer pulls from. Recently I found some drawer handles at Ikea which would be perfect f...

Re: Pulley to lift kiln lid.

Or fill a 4 inch PVC pipe with concrete, inserting a large hook into the wet concrete at one end to hang it from and capping the other end. Very tidy.

Re: Gold pendant, silver posts?

I'd call Fire Mountain up and ask them to really clarify this.
I've never had a problem with gold filled posts, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Re: using cookie cutters

I tried making xmas tree ornaments using clay molds. Rolled out a slab of clay and punched out the shapes with cookie cutters and then bisque fired the clay. I made animal shapes like a bison, pig, moose and filled the molds with frit. None of them were very successful because the glass shrank away ...

I have the 1414 Skutt kiln, and for the most part I really like it. It's been running pretty much 24 hours a day for 3 weeks now (I've had it almost two years). My first kiln was a much smaller Skutt, and I still use it almost daily without a problem. Since you live in Portland, having the manufactu...

looking for a good small sandblaster

I'm interested in doing some sandblasting of small pieces of glass, probably only jewelry or tiles up to 6"x6". I don't have room in my studio for the big set-up, but I could handle the smaller type. My air compresser should be able to handle the job (I use it for mica applications). There...

I fire my mica up to 1438 (my full fuse temp.) and it doesn't burn off. There is always some left on the surface to wipe off. Love the stuff!

Just a quick addition--I read somewhere long ago, and I don't remember where, that superglue should never be used to hold glass together in a kiln because as it burns off it gives off very very dangerous fumes. Elmers was the recommended suggestion, being much more harmless. Works for me!

thanks for your replies! I'm beginning to think it's going to be possible to do this! The pendant will be regular pendant size, maybe two inches tall. I have a design where the cat's tail is wrapped around its body so there are no skinny parts hanging off the main design. I use only a tiny pinch of ...

Thanks for the dichro suggestion, it makes sense. Not sure if my customer wants a 100% dichro cat, but I'll run it past her! It's a bit tricky since she wants me to hide the cat's ashes so they're not visible, so I'll have to do some more experiments on dichro layering. I don't think the enamels wou...

keeping a crisp shape to cutout form

I usually don't do this sort of thing, but I've got a special request for a pendant in a cat shape. I do have a Taurus ringsaw, so I cut out a simple shape of a cat out of regular black BE and another identical shape out of the thinner BE and put them on top of each other. My thought was that that c...
