Very true, LOL. I use fiber paper inside my dams as it has a bit of "give" which I figure is a good thing as the glass expands.

[ I do use HD board sometimes. The HD stands for high density and it somewhat more rigid than LD. I have worked with LD board and not rigidized and it does stick a bit so I can see the efficacy of using the colloidal alumina. Using colloidal silica simply adds more toxic particles to the mix. If I ...

I've sand cast with Bullseye and it does fine soaking at 1500 F for an hour. I'm using a sifting of kaolin as a release on top of the sand. My sand mix is about 50% 120 olivine sand, 30% silica sand, 20% plaster. ch Going to be firing both BE and S96 on sand in a couple of days. My sand bed is a mi...

duraboard as dams

Am considering using duraboard strips as dams since I can get longer lengths than with cut-up mullite shelves. I know it's an insulator while mullite transmits heat. Do I need to modify my firing schedule to compensate for the insulating nature of the duraboard? Can I mix duraboard and mullite dams ...

Suzan...why not just spend $100 and have an accountant do the tax forms? Think how much glass you could produce with the time you waste diddling around with forms and paperwork...

Also, check your email. I sent you another possible industry code number.

Re: Question New Kiln User

Hello! :?: My first question to you all is: Can I "cure" for lack of a better term, the kiln wash on the bottom of my kiln, like I would the shelves at 500 degrees (lid propped a little), rather then waiting for them to air day? Yes. :?: Also: Can the thicker Kaiser Board be cut into smal...

Re: sno industries?

I hope not. This past week I've done 2 firings starting from 33 degrees and one starting from 29 degrees using a standard schedule.

Re: Does Borax migrate?

[my current guess is that the borax solution migrated around to cover the entire piece. Does that make sense?

Thanks,

Interesting. I recently heard that for the first time small numbers of borax, including juveniles, have been seen mixed in with the annual caribou migration.

I think what was causing Carol's problem in the old ceramic kiln was the use of some paints, lusters and such that will leave deposits on the elements. But you put new elements in so that shouldn't be the problem. Exactly what I figured...was figuring some of those impurities also be in/on the bric...

I purchased a used ceramics kiln for fusing and everything I put in it had devit, plus it smelled terrible when fired. Tried firing it empty really hot a couple of times to get rid of contamination without success. Sold it to a potter for $100 more than I paid as it was no good for glass. You might ...

I researched this last year when someone brought a block to my studio wanting a hole drilled in it. It's much easier to buy a block that has a hole molded into it. There are lots of places on the internet that carry them.

kiln shelves, a question about composition

I have an opportunity to purchase a quantity of 20x30" pottery kiln shelves inexpensively. The description I have of them is that they're heavy. The original owner was a potter and is now deceased. The shelves are sitting in a barn and are being sold by the new owner of the farm. He knows nothi...

Why is this product better than using regular dams from mullite backed with kiln brick or posts? It would certainly need some kind of superior qualities to justify its cost????

You should be okay with your schedule if you substitute 9999 for 2000. 9999 tells the kiln to go as fast as possible.
