waving a piece of glass
I've got a stainless steel mold that has hills and valleys in it, and plan to use it for a "wave" in a piece of glass - similar to a flag waving. I'd like the top and bottom of the 9"x7" piece of 1/4" ( Spectrum with a fused cover layer ) to have a curve that comes up from t...

Re: fusing 96 white streaky to clear
The fusing turned out well - but the kiln shelf left some impressions on the back side of the glass. I wanted to allow the white to be seen clearly against the clear, like clouds. Unfortunately, there are some areas of kiln shelf impressions. What do you think of sandblasting the back side, then fir...

fusing 96 white streaky to clear
I have a piece of 96 about 8"x10" that I want to fuse to a piece of clear 96. Normally I would go about 350 degrees to 1000, hold 8, then 350 to 1225, hold 15, then 500 to 1350, hold 45. Due to its size, I'm wondering if this is sufficient time at the holds to make sure I get a good smooth...

clay sticking in glass
I slumped a test piece of double strength glass, into a form, with a clay pot that was kiln washed in the middle of it. From a design point of view it works well, but.... the bottom of the pot stuck in the glass, and I'd llike to get it undone. Previously in situations like this I've tried water, oi...

borax/devit half solved
A piece just fired in a clay bisqued-fired mold produced an interesting surface. The top of an entire piece, about 21x15", of plate glass ( tin side down) was fired with borax on the surface, The borax came in the form of a hand soap, and had been sitting out for a couple of weeks in a glass fil...

casting starfire
Looking through the archives, I realize there may be a problem with 1/4" starfire in terms of devit, or tin bloom(are they the same?). Does anyone have a good line on whether this was an older problem that is now not a problem, due to rebatching specs, or does using starfjre mean I'm headed for...

big bubble dilemma
It looks like a volcanic explosion caught in action! The secrets of the ancients rising up to meet modern day glass art ...? I've tried to cast a 15x21" piece of 1/4" starfire glass in a plaster/silica mold at 350-1250, hold 30, 60-1280, hold 30, then 9999 to 1450 ( and also to 1525), hold...

plaster-silica mold vs. clay
So now that its time to put the pedal to the metal, what's the scoop on a plaster-silica mold vs. a clay mold...I plan to sculpt the texture of a tree into the mold, and I have about 15 pieces that are about 24" square to make. Clay, when bisque fired, will probably be great for a mold material...

how to ...on a big job
I'm finally to the point of getting started on a big job that's been brewing for a few monthes. I'm almost finished with building a new, bigger kiln for the project. Several questions come up, for which I'd appreciate input. There will be about 15 molds of silica/p;aster, about 24x26 inches, for the...

stainless mold for a post
My thought was to put a bottle onto a post that was on the floor of the kiln, and get the bottle to drape as it will in a minor slumping.
I'mwondering, would a stainless post welded to a plate of steel,if kiln washed, allow me to take the bottle off the mold when the slump was complete?

steel vs. clay mold
Steel vs clay...that is the question. I'd like to make a fixture for putting glass onto, that would have a 1-2" post on a base, so I could put a glass piece onto the post. If it were made from steel, I assume I'd need fibre paper on the steel to protect the glass from the steel. If it were from...

steel vs. clay fixture
I'd like to make a fixture for putting glass onto that would have a post about 1-2" tall coming off the base. If it were done from steel rods welded onto a base plate, I'd probably have to use fibre paper to protect the glass from the steel, and I'd like to stay away from this component. If it ...

kiln lid material
I'm building a bigger, better, faster kiln, and am taking stock on some of the materials. The walls and floor are brick, and the lid is a ceramic composite board called M board. On the inside of this is a layer of refrasil, Irish Linen, and then there will be 6 elements hanging from the lid. When pl...

1 large panel vs. 6 smaller panels
Any help by those that have tried it would be quite appreciated. I've got a commission to do a wall 52"x76", of a tree with leaves, cast three-dimesionally with clay ,and then plaster/silica mold, then to fire in either 1/4" or 3/8" glass. Any suggestions on the thickness of the ...

sealer for ceramic board
After sandblasting for 25 years, I find the components in the ceramic boards, and fibers, irritate my throat, and thus my creative desire to live forever. At least the fantasy keeps me popping up each morning.... The new kiln I've had built so far is brick on the floor and walls, but has an M board ...

kiln elements,controller, etc
After a year and a half of sitting in the yard, waiting for the commission of my dreams, I'm finally ready to finish the inside workings of my new kiln. It is 42"long, and 30" wide, with 18" depth. The walls are brick, and the lid is M board. I'd like to find a good source for a contr...

How to install a 52"x76" wall of cast glass w. a s
I'm just on the cusp of signing a contract to do a cast molded wall 52"x76". It would be sculpted clay, then a plaster/silica mold to put the glass into. My kiln is not anywhere near the size of the opening. I wanted to use metal strips of H channel, or wood to install into the opening. Th...
