Thanks for the response, Bert. I might have asked the wrong questions. I am planning to use the fiberboard flat on my kilnshelf, not raised, to slump my glass on. Just cutting out a hole in the middle & slumping it the depth of the board, maybe the depth of two bards if I stacked it. Will this b...

Are you looking for magazines covering fusing only, or are you interested in other techniques like lampwork, stained glass, glassblowing etc?

Using fiber board for the 1st time

I am planning on using some 3/8" fiber board for my first drop rings. I have not used it before & even though I have been told how to use it, am having amnesia about a few things. 1. Do I have to kiln wash it first? 2. Can I stack it to make a deeper drop? 3.Do I have to weight it so that t...

Not in my history. I am afraid Home Economics was the only subject I really tanked in. I couldn't even finish my first project. (I still remember that darn apron with horror.)

However I do come from a long line of amazing quilters...

I sympathise. I had a recent bad experience too. I took quite a few fusing related classes at Glass Expo this spring & while most were excellent, one was so bad I walked out after half an hour. The instructor had no materials prepared, had no handouts, was incredibly disorganized etc. All in all...

I've been trying to get a successful drop ring for the last month and this is your first piece out of your new kiln? Beginner's luck I think but am hoping it holds up! I haven't even tried a drop ring yet. We will see how that goes. I also have the makings for box-casting etc. Too little time, too ...

First fusing in new kiln!

I have been fusing small pieces in my little Aim bead annealer for the last year. Lots of fun but you can't do too many things in a 6"by6" space. Just got my new Skutt 1018 hooked up & finished my first fuse. I really like this kiln & it is so easy to use. (The Fuji controller on m...

We just had to run new 240 from our main panel, (about 60 feet) put in a new 100 amp box & reroute the dryer & airconditioner to put in my new 1018 Skutt. Parts were about $500 Canadian, but luckily we had an electrician 'guy'. He just charged $50 & a bottle of whiskey. It took him about...

Yes, Kugler is used in glassblowing mainly so many of the colors are very concentrated for blowing out. There is also Gaffer glass - http://www.gafferglass.com/ & Reichenbach Glass. I am sure there are others. The COEs varies from about 90 to 96. That info is readily available if you need to kno...

I don't know if this will work for you but I have used acid etching instead of sandblasting to successfully remove devit on cabochons. I have not tried it on anything large though.

Glass/pottery in same kiln?

I have been researching this but can't seem to find any definative answers. My sister wants to get a kiln for glass fusing but she also works with clay & would like a kiln she can use for both. Is this practical? I have emailed various manufacturers but no one has gotten back to me yet. I would ...

I learned a really great method for doing this from Phil Teefy. If you run a pencil or something similar across the twisted handle of an enamel sieve, it vibrates it just enough to release a very even coat of enamel onto your glass. Works like magic. I took two classes from Phil at Glass Craft Expo ...

My question: Was the melt too long?@ 1600.
Should it have been shorter and higher(1650).
I am wondering if there is a reason you are going up to 1600?
I know the Bullseye notes mention 1550 & the boxcasting demo I took mentioned this temp as well.

I saw the Armstrong glass when I was in Portland. I was astounded at what garbage it was. It is enamel smeared on thin float glass. A total waste of glass and enamel to my eye. It is enamel on glass but I actually liked it. I am not sure it was meant tp look like stained glass, I think it has a dis...
