Re: Slump schedules : Ripples, Twists & Grooves

Hi Kinsey, Perhaps it’s a typo, but your posted schedule shows “0” for the anneal soak hold at 900. If the two-stage slump soaks have worked for you in the past for highly trxtured molds, then try it. If you keep an eye on it when it reaches your top processing temperature, and if your kiln controll...

Re: Dust cloud

Hi Shawn. I use 220 AO in my blaster and, yes, there is quite a bit of airborne/cloudy material, but i can definitely see what I’m doing. I blast at about 50 psi. You may have too large or a worn ceramic aperture in your nozzle, which is allowing too much material to pass through. How does the blast...

Jenny. I wasn’t sure if you had this part sheet. Maybe it can help? https://assets.abrasive-tech.com/litera ... mast12.pdf

Re: Crystal Master Pro 12 Problem

Hi Jenny. I had one of these for quite a few years and had to replace the switch once. Assuming that your unit is the same machine as I had in the US, getting that base plate off was a bear, but I did it. As I recall, I grabbed the outer edge of the plate and laid my forearms on the plastic housing/...

If you post your firing schedule and perhaps a photo, it would help in getting you some advice.

It’s a beautiful design and you've obviously put a lot of time and thought into it. I hope you post photoss of it when it's completed. :)

Re: Cracked during heat up

I always hesitate to publish my schedules for high fire and challenging compositions, because my experience/kiln is unique to my work. Still, I think once you eliminate the compatibility questions, I believe slowing your anneal cool segment would be helpful. If I was adjusting your schedule, I would...

Re: Cracked during heat up

I understand you observed the piece cracked on the way up, but I would think too about the anneal cool segment you’ve used. I think 9999 from 960 to 850 is too fast, especially with a piece involving multiple firings. You may be retaining stress with each firing. I’ve done a lot of combings with whi...

Re: bottom heat kiln.

Hi Jen. I’m sorry, but I don’t have a specific spec sheet or manufacturer link for the hard fiber board. I believe it is the same material as is fairly common in kiln lids and also in Jen-Kens all fiber kilns.

Re: bottom heat kiln.

Thank you all for your replies. Brad, the “crap” issue has been one of my primary concerns with this configuration. No, the proposed bottom elements can not be controlled separately from the top elements. I will not be doing any deep casting and never fire multiple shelves, so I’m going to pass on t...

Re: bottom heat kiln.

Hi. I’m considering a new kiln with top and floor elements and saw this post. I’m curious if anyone here sees a disadvantage to this arrangement. I’ve seen where some European manufacturers offer this as an option in their glass kilns. The kiln I’m considering has a 27” x27” x 17” (depth) chamber. C...

Dick - This is a great piece. I am really drawn to the movement of the edge and intensity of the green you chose to use. What are the approximate dimensions?

Re: New Studio - New Kiln

Thanks Marty for the suggestion. If it were two years ago, I’d seriously consider taking your advice and build a kiln. Right now I’m neck-deep into rebuilding a home, studio and shops and re-provisioning them from ground zero. I don’t think I’ve got the juice now to take on another project! Plus, I’...

Re: New Studio - New Kiln

Another question I have is in regards to kiln maintenance when operating in humid climates. Up until now, my kiln work experience has been in dry, far northern CA. I’m now in TN with hot, humid summers. Should that be a factor when considering brick vs fiber kilns? My studio will be air conditioned ...

Re: New Studio - New Kiln

Wow! Brad, that Nabertherm is one heck of a beautiful kiln! I contacted a US distributor and learned they no longer sell to individuals, just schools and businesses. Probably for the best, as I got the impression it was going to be outside my budget comfort zone :D David - Thank you for sharing your...

Re: New Studio - New Kiln

Thanks Jen. Really appreciate your input. What an ordeal you went through with that fiber kiln! I’m definitely starting to think a custom built kiln is the best way for me to go. I think that’s likely the only way I’ll end up with what I really need. I’m loving living in TN, but feeling a bit isolat...

New Studio - New Kiln

I'm hoping this will start a discussion regarding people's experiences with fiber vs brick kilns. I'm looking to replace 2 kilns. A Glass Glow 24" x 24" x 18" (brick walls, fiber top) and a Skutt GM 22 clamshell (all brick). I need the capacity to handle a 24" shelf and I prefer ...

Re: Fiber Kiln/Shelf

This thread is very timely for me. I am slowly re-provisioning my studio and recently purchased a new, all fiber kiln and fiber kiln shelf. I’ve completed the burnout and regidizing process. I have had concerns about the surface smoothness and overall shelf durability. My supplier has suggested, and...
