Danger! Magless! Danger!

A little warning.... A magless from several years ago - I don't remember which year - just exploded in my kitchen. It didn't fall apart, it detonated sending glass fragments across the room. I heard the 'explosion' 2 floors down. Had I been in the kitchen I would almost certainly have sustained a in...

Re: Glue for jewellery-making

I use DP460 - http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/dp460-epoxy ... p-312.html
It's not cheap, and it takes a week to fully cure - but it is the best I've found.

Re: Wearing gloves when cutting glass

I have lymphedema in my left arm--my dominant hand of course. Exactly what I am hoping to avoid! I'm on chemo for 4 months - I think that for that period I'll have to take up a less dangerous activity - and when it's done I'll invest in gloves. Where's the fun in my employer giving me 4 months paid...

Re: Wearing gloves when cutting glass

Thanks for all the tips - I shall investigate art restorers gloves and safety equipment.. whilst also avoiding fungus by keeping my hands dry (so I think grinding may be off limits for the medium term).

Wearing gloves when cutting glass

I've been cutting and grinding glass forever, and still frequently find I have small cuts on my fingers; I am not particularly careless, but these things happen. For medical reasons I now cannot risk cutting myself - at least on my right hand. (I am right handed). Is there any kind of glove that wil...

I can verify that the thinner is evil stuff - I once decanted some into a plastic container, and the next morning all I had was a puddle of goo on my glass worktop.

I agree with the comment on image size - I instinctively clicked on them to get a larger view.

Also, I'd prefer a sans-serif typeface, it would look more modern.

Can't fault the glass though!

Hi Dave - good to see a fellow South-Westerner!

I like the dish - it is a good choice of colours, giving it - as you say - a 'refreshing' look.
Did you start by making stacks of glass to get the concentric colours? The cross shapes are baffling me though..

I've used an acid bath in a fume cupboard (HF acid) for deep etching of flashed glass at a local college. We had to wear 2 pairs of rubber gloves, a facemask and goggles. The acid eats the glass at an alarming rate - to the extent that you could etch holes right through the glass if you weren't watc...

I use Velvet - you shouldn't dilute it 'cos it's pretty dilute already. If your glass doesn't etch in 5 minutes it's not going to - I've found some glasses that go quick and some that are not affected at all by the cream. I guess the chemical composition of different colours and glasses affect the e...

That would be 'mould' in the UK - are we going for a multilingual dictionary?

I have that mould - and dishes made with it are my biggest sellers. I think people like the depth of the finished item, as most slumped dishes are very shallow. (my mould of this shape is 8cm deep) Anyway - I start with a blank about 1cm larger than the mould width (which is about 33cm), and I slump...

I've found that what people are prepared to pay depends strongly on the context in which the items are being sold. Selling in an upmarket gallery (no doubt to upmarket people) automatically lends some weight to the value of an item. The same people would expect to pay less for the same item at, say,...

Full to 1535 soak 5mins,Full to 955 soak 40mins, 145 deg/hr to room temp. I left the platter in the kiln overnight to cool. . I'm no expert - but I wouldn't drop from 1535 to 955 at full rate. I take it down from top (820 full fuse, 760 ish slump) (sorry, can't think in farenheit) to 560 or so at f...

I don't understand - BE anneals at about 516 deg C - how long did you hold at that temperature?

actually the guild owns the shops
So if you were to open your own shop I bet there'd be queues round the block of 'non-guild' crafters with wares to sell.... or are they the sort of 'guild' who'd put a horses head in your bed to warn you off?!

I use the gas flame of my kitchen hob to work stringer. I even bend rod that way, a bit.
Candles are fine but very sooty - the gas flame is soot free.
I am assuming gas cookers are not just a European thing...

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to eat silica? Here´s why I need to know..... I am currently located in northern Germany and my German is limited. Looked up the word for silica in a German/English dictionary and came up with "Kieselerde". .. have you checked out the http://www.bohle...
